Mr. Bell made Huron his home for between fifteen and eighteen years, and was well known. FRANK DUNNING

Frank P. Dunning, who has been Train Master Burke's clerk for two years, went east on the 1st day of December to visit his relatives. At Winona he had a severe hemorrhage and thought of abandoning his trip. But he decided to go ahead, and did. Hardly anything more was heard of him until Jan. 6, when Mr. Burke received a Massachusetts paper containing the following sad announcement:

Died, in Methuen, Dec. 27, Frank P. Dunning, aged 24 years, 3 months and 26 days. Mr. Dunning was a native of Portland, Maine, but lived several years in Methuen. In the spring of 1878 he went west and remained about 18 months. In May, 1880, he returned to the west, where he secured a position on the Chicago & Northwestern railroad, being located the past two years at Huron, Dakota. The first of December he started east on a thirty days' leave of absence; he had been at home only a few days when he was taken seriously ill of congestion of the lungs and failed rapidly, dying Sunday about 11 a.m. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at his father's residence, Rev. W. W. Hooper of West Haverhill, Mass., officiating. The remains were placed in the tomb at Salem, N. H.

Frank was a genial young man, with many friends, who will deeply mourn his demise. But a sadder one that all these is that one who grieve at the death of her heart's love.

The funeral was held from the family residence on Wisconsin street, Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 6, conducted by Rev. Mr. Davis. "Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven."

Wednesday afternoon Mr. J. L. Ayres received a postal which read thus:

Medina, O., Jan. 1, 1886. -- My wife died at 5 this morning, expect to return home next week.
S. M. West

Emma Lampson came from Ohio and worked for Mrs. Ferry in the millinery store until the fall of 1884, when Miss L. and Mrs. West were married in Huron and began housekeeping in Mr. Hoskyn's house on the Avenue. Later they moved to Iowa street, just north of Third, and were pleasantly settled there. But Mrs. West's health began to fail through the approach of consumption, and last October she concluded to visit her friends in Ohio, believing she would recover. The visit proved the reverse of her expectations, and the above message from the sad-hearted husband tells the rest of the story.

Hers was a lovely life, and she passed to a better world in the full assurance of a blissful immortality.

Gone Golfing

Vernon T. (Skip) Estes, Jr. passed comfortably on Sunday, May 8, 2011. Skip was born in Huron, South Dakota on June 1, 1939 to Vernon T. Estes, Sr. and Lucille Lambert. He graduated from Webster High School, South Dakota, in 1958 where he met LaVonne Murschel. They married in the summer after graduation and moved to Washington State where they had two children and worked side-by-side as entrepreneurs in four successful businesses. An avid golfer, Skip retired with LaVonne to Sun City, Arizona in 2002 to spend more time on the greens and in leisure with their many friends. Married for 53 years, he is survived by wife LaVonne, two brothers, Ted Estes and Harry Bayliffe, daughter Dr. Lori Estes-Raybold and husband Thom Raybold of Washington, D.C., son Brian D. Estes and wife Karen of Graham, Washington, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His mother and father precede him in death. His wife and children will sorely miss his smile, strong sense of humor, loving ways, and values like the strong work ethic he instilled in his kids. May the golf course in heaven be everything he imagined. Skip and Dad, we love you and will miss you so much.

In honor of Skip's wishes no service will be held. A private family memorial was held on Wednesday, May 11, 2011.

STIVER, PIONEER MERCHANT, DIES
Death Comes Today About Week After Stroke; Started Business Here in 1882
J. M. Stiver, 78 years of age, one of Huron’s first merchants, died shortly before noon today at his home, 156 Fifth street southwest.
Coming to Huron March 1, 1883, Jack Stiver, as he was familiarly known, opened a harness shop on the present site of the Morin Colton grocery house. He gradually turned his buriness into a hardware store and about 40 years ago moved to the site of the present Stiver Hardware store.
Mr. Stiver was a member of the Huron fire department for several years and, together with Con. R. Huntley, former sheriff of Beadle county, set a world’s record in a hose coupling contest at Pierre in the early days.
SUFFERED STROKE
Stricken with a stroke of paralysis October 2, Mr. Stiver failed rapidly. Death occurred a few minutes before 12 o’clock today.
Funeral arrangements had not been completed this afternoon but Sunday was set as the tentative date for the services.
John Mitchell Stiver was born September 5, 1857, in Jefferson county, Pa., and moved to Shellsburg, Iowa, at the age of six. He was married May 10, 1886, to Margaret Corcoran at Carthage, S.D.
Mr. Stiver brought his bride to Huron and moved into the Major Coffin house, next door to the harness shop and also on the site now occupied by the Morin-Colien building. This was the first house built in Huron.
Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Stiver, only three of whom are still living. Surviving are the widow and three daughters, Mrs. C. R. Kent, and Estella Stiver, Huron, and Mrs. E. C. Waldron, Casper, Wyo. Four sons, James W., Otis, Leslie and Dave, are dead.
Three sisters also survive, Mrs. Anna Royder, Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Maud Heathman and Mrs. Laura Heathman of Shellsburg, Iowa.
When Mr. Stiver came to Huron, he filed on a claim south of the city on land which now is part of the county poor farm.
His hardware store on Dakota avenue between Second and Third streets burned down about three years ago and it was replaced by the present brick structure.
Although the active management of the business was taken over several years ago by the pioneer’s son-in-law, C. R. Kent, Mr. Stiver continued to go to the store until a short time before his death. He was there the day before suffering the stroke.
Mr. Stiver was a member of the Elks lodge.
