Miller


Located in Central Hand county, Miller is the county seat.  By 1925, the town had three newspapers, "The Gazette" est. 1884 (Daniel Healy), and "The Press", (Tamblyn Brothers) est. 1882, and "The Sun" (Thomas Stratton).

In autumn of 1880, the Chicago and Northwestern Railraod extended its tracks from Tracy, Minnesota to Pierre, South Dakota, paving the way for new communites along the line.  In July of 1881, Henry Miller, with his son E. J., first visited what was to become Miller.  The town was organized in September of that year, and the first men arrived to begin the progress.  Among them were:

    Other early residents were George Hurtzell, who built a 2-story hardware store, and Horace Warner.

In October of 1881, the post office was established, with  W. H. Miller as postmaster.  Miss Emma Acklen managed the office.

On Jan. 2, 1882, W. H. and E. J. Miller, sons of Henry, started "Hand County Press" newspaper.  This was the only paper being published between Huron and Pierre at that time.

On June 25, 1882, the Miller Public Schools opened.  Judson Chubbuck was the teacher of 15-20 students.

In 1889, a streetcar company was started to run between towns

In 1890,  J. C. Yetzer and A. D. Hill erected a building referred to as "The Old Courthouse" or the "Whitcomb Building".  This was used until the present one was built in 1926.

In 1897, phone service became available to Hand county residents, although limited.

The first hospital was a small area above the post office, organized by Drs. McWhorter and Wheelock.  In 1925, the hospital was moved to the  Bohming Building .  Memorial Hospital opened Feb. 1948, built at a cost of $185,000.

The first library was in the C. C. Campbell book store, with a few books available for borrowing.  A library was made over the Hand County bank, with May Redmond as librarian.  The Miller library was over the Fire Hall, and in 1947 the Miller Library became the Hand County Library.

In 1903, a sewer system was constructed, with electric lights installed in 1904.  In 1905, the wooden sidewalks were replaced by cement.

In 1923, a city auditorium was built on Dr. S. R. Wallis' former lot.
