Military Rites at Wessington

Funeral services for Lieutenant Doyle Syring, 24, will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon from the community auditorium in Wessington.  A military service will be accorded the young flyer, and will be in charge of the Wessington American Legion.  Burial will be made in the cemetery at Wessington.

Lt. Syring, only son of Alfred Syring of Hulbert township, was killed Friday when his plane crashed enroute from Norman, Okla. to Hutchinson, Kans., on a military mission.  Killed with Lt. Syring was Ensign Elizabeth I. Seay of Richmond, Va.  The accident occurred near Goltry, Okla.

While details concerning the crash were not available, it was thought possible the plane had encountered a sudden storm.  Lt. Syring was an experienced pilot.

Accompanied by a marine escort, the body of the crash victim was brought to Wessington Wednesday forenoon.

Lt. Syring was Hand county's first war casualty.

Born May 18, 1919 in Hulburt township, Lt. Syring spent his entire life in that vicinity until his enlistment in May 1942.  He graduated from the Wessington high school and after graduation took a four-year course at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.

In May, 1942 he enlisted as a navy cadet, beginning his training at Minneapolis in July.  In January, 1943, he was transferred to Corpus Christi, Tex. for further training and in May was graduated with a lieutenant's commission, and received his navy wings.

Following his graduation, Lt. Syring was sent to New Orleans for a special officers' training course, and was then chosen as a marine officer to instruct navy cadets at the Norman, Okla., Navy Air Field.  He was an instructor at the field at the time of his death.

Lt. Syring made his last visit at home in July.

Surviving his death are his father and step-mother, and a half-sister.  His mother and one brother preceded him in death.
