Rescue from a hospital ship that had been bombed five times
was the unforgettable experience of Lt. Joan Sweetland, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Sweetland of Orient.
Lt. Sweetland was one of the 103 American nurses who were rescued
from the hospital ship Newfoundland which was bombed and burned in Salerno
Gulf by the Germans September 13. The ship was plainly marked as
a hospital ship.
Lt. Sweetland wrote that they were bombed five times, and the Nazis
were really successful the fifth time. The nurses lost all their
belongings.
They were taken back to North Africa, but have since returned to
Italy. Lt. Sweetland is with an evacuation unit.
