Lake Louise

Lake Louise is located 14 miles northwest of Miller on Big Wolf Creek, and is a State Recreation Area and Game Refuge.  This land was originally homesteaded by the parents of Dr. E. H. Wilson, who came up with the idea to make a lake there, and Dr. Wilson put the plans into motion in 1931.  The dam was built in 1932 by the Game and Fish Department of South Dakota.   In 1935-36 the WPA planted trees and shrubery in the area.  The lake was dedicated in 1937.  The State Game and Fish Department planted Bass, Bluegill, Crappies, and Bullheads.  The lake was maintained by Hand county until 1945, when the State took over.
