Celebrate Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary

***************

The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eggerling, pioneer residents of this community, was celebrated at Polo, Monday, November 16.

The ceremonies began at 9:30 at the St. Liborius church at Polo with Solemn High Mass celebrated by the Rev. Father H. Pothmann.  The Rev. Father Krayser, of White Lake, was Deacon and the Rev. Father Pohlen of Onida, was Subdeacon.  The Rev. Father Burkel, of Frankfort, was in the sanctuary.

Virginia Eggerling, Layola and Marcellus Martinmaas (grandchildren) and Billie Conway were flower bearers.

Henry Eggerling was born in Lintel Weidenbruck, Westphalen, Germany, July 18, 1853; and Elizabeth Klenner was born at Reisberg, Westphalen, Germany, June 7, 1859.  They were married at Lintel, Weidenbruck, Westphalen, Germany, on November 16, 1881.  They came to West Point, Nebraska, September 15, 1882, and in 1885 they came to Hand county and settled in their present home.

Twelve children were born to them.  They are: Joe E., Katherine, Henry and Mrs. Marie Barnes, of St. Paul., Minnesota; John E., of Brainard, Minnesota; Mrs. M. E. Loomer, of Mitchell, S.D.; Casper, Theodore B., Herman, Conrad and Mrs. Henry Martinmaas, of Orient.  One daughter, Rose, died at the age of 16.  There are twenty-six grandchildren.  Three sons, John, Henry and Theodore are veterans of the World War.

A family dinner for forty was served at the Eggerling home at noon.  Special guests at the dinner were the family and the Rev. Dean MacConnachie, of Redfield; Rev. Father Pothman, Rev. Father Burkel, Rev. Father Pohlen, Rev. Father Krayser, J. J. Struif, of Miller and P. J. Dunn, of Orient.

The rooms were decorated in yellow and gold.  A large gold colored wedding cake was served to the gueses.  More than a hundred and fifty friends visited at the Eggerling home during the afternoon and evening.  Besides numerous personal gifts and notes of congratulations a purse of gold was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eggerling by the people of the Polo community.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Eggerling are in excellent health and very active.  The wealth of friendship showered upon them by the people of the entire Polo and Orient communities on their golden wedding anniversary was only partial expression of the esteem in which this couple is held.  They have always made friends and strangers alike feel at home by the hospitality that always radiated from their home, and Mrs. Eggerling is truly the "Sweetheart of the community".
