Vayland News
Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Van Schalek, October 2, a daughter.
Mrs. Sabrina Butler returned to Chamberlain Sunday after visiting her mother, Mrs. Ida Fisher.
Mrs. M. C. Wood returned to her home here Saturday after visiting her parents and other relatives at Manchester, Ia., for a week.
Mrs. Sarah Perry left Sunday for Munice (Muncie?) Ind., to care for her son Earl, who is ill at the home of his sister, Mrs. Robert Mansfield.
Dick Vetters, sr., of Traynor, Ia., is visiting his children Mrs. Lee Lacek, John, Herbert and Dick Vetters, jr., in this vicinity.
The Vayland store, operated by A. J. Ravenscroft, was broken into last week and a sum of money was taken from the safe.
Ree Heights News
Mr. Heckenlible, who resides on the Peter Namany farm, fell from a barn roof on Monday and broke some ribs. He was in the Miller hospital for a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Henson from Bloomfield, Ia., were Wednesday and Thursday visitors at the Robert Henson home. The two Mr. Hensons are cousins.
Mrs. Will Cowan plans to have her house moved into town this week. Paul Blaseg, jr., will do the moving.
Thelma Nelson has a light case of diptheria.
Dave Crackle plans to leave soon to attend a barber school at St. Paul.
Mrs. Jake Hasart and infant son returned from the Miller hospital on Sunday.
Mrs. C. E. Else is in St. Paul visiting her daughter, Miss Avis, who is attending school there.
Ila Hockox is recovering from diptheria.
Two of the Earl Godfrey children are quite ill with what is believed to be paralysis.
Mrs. Mensing was recently married to Mr. Printz.
Polo News
Joe Schaefer, son of Conrad Schaefer of Polo, is visiting at home after an absence of nearly three years. He is employed in a garage at Detroit, Mich.
Casper Kluthe and family and J. B. Miller drove to Nebraska to visit friends and relatives. J. B. Miller returned after a few days visit but the Kluthes will remain longer.
Phil Burke, clerk of the Polo store, was called home by the death of his father. Mr. Burke was 66 years of age and died suddenly.

Max Mortenson dragged the roads last week.
Mrs. Charles Ford went to Wessington last week for a few days' visit at the home of W. Andrews and also to visit her new grandson. She returned home Thursday.
Mrs. John Roach, an aged early day settler of north Hand county, died recently. She was the grandmother of Irene Roach, who taught school near here for three years.
L. J. Geiver started to work on the Dr. Turner farm Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Sol J. Prunner, early day settlers of Hand county but now of Sioux City, called at the Pete Geiver home for a short visit. Mr. Prunner said that his mother, aged 83, is still in good health and enjoying her California home. His sister Stella also is in good health.
Mr. and Mrs. Jake Heuther were in Parkston Sunday to attend the funeral services for Mr. Heuther's aged father, who died Friday.
Dan Winter of Bates had a narrow escape when his truck, loaded with corn, backed down the Vayland hill and went through the railings on the west side. The truck was wrecked. Mr. Winter only received slight injuries. He was badly hurt last winter when he fell from a windmill platform.
The O. V. Breese family are all reported to be well and enjoying life at Cottage Grove, Ore.
One of Mr. and Mrs. Eschenbaum's daughters fell from a pony last week and had her arm broken in three places. She is in town at the home of her grandparents. Mrs. Engelman is on the farm helping with the housework.
Bill Freese played for a dance in Buffalo county Saturday night.
A. J. Stout of Huron was here looking after his Spring Lake ranch last week.
R. E. Morrison repaired a washout on a Spring Lake bridge last week.
The Rev. Mr. Rupp held "depression services" at the Congregational church in Pleasant Valley township Sunday. He wore overalls and a work shirt. No collection was taken up.
The O. V. Breese family have bought a home in Cottage Grove, Ore., and are moving into it.
Dave Barrett has recovered from injuries received in an accident.

Mrs. Efie Loomer arrived here on Tuesday last. She will spend the rest of the winter with her daughter Mrs. A. E. Waterman.
Mrs. Hines, from Iowa, who has been here visiting her son Herman and other relatives around here, left for her home Sunday evening.

LEVI P. MORTON TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE SATURDAY ON 100TH BIRTHDAY
Miller--Levi P. Morton, former Miller resident, will celebrate his 100th birthday at Arlington with open house Feb. 13.
He was born at Somerset, Ind., and came to Hand County in 1883 to homestead. He brought his bride from Indiana to Miller in 1887. Beginning in 1894 he served a four-year term as superintendent of schools of Hand County.
Morton is charter member of the Jan. 12, 1888 Blizzard Club which meets at Lincoln, Neb., each year on an. 12. He made his home in Lincoln until he had a broken hip in 1957, when he came to Arlington to live with his daughter, Mrs. C. W. Quinn. He also has a son, Avery, at Cambridge, Mass. He has never missed voting a Republican ticket.
Long ago he promised to return to Indiana to visit relatives and friends when became 100 so plans are being made to fly there next May or June.
Each year Morton writes a special poem for his birthday and the one for 1960 is titled "My Centennial."
