HIGHMORE- Ernest Kozel, 79, of Fort Myers, Florida, died Monday
April 14, 1986, in Fort Myers Community Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church,
Highmore, with the Rev. Mark Holland officiating. Burial will
be in Bohemian National Cemetery.
He was born July 24, 1906, to Mr. and Mrs. John (Anna Cermak)
Kozel at Highmore. He farmed on his parents’ farm and later had
his own farm for 30 years. In 1961 he retired and worked for
the local lumber yard. After the death of his parents, he moved
to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1971 to live with his sister, Alice,
and her husband, Emmet Wolfe. Since 1975, he had spent the
winters in Fort Myers, Florida.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Rites held for Jeanette Auch
Funeral services were held in Our Savior Lutheran Church this
Wednesday for Jeanette Auch who died Saturday at the Huron
Nursing Home at the age of 78 years, seven months and 26 days.
Pastor Youngquist officiated and burial was in the Highmore City
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Knippling, Donald Knippling, Daniel
Knippling, Gale Auch, Steven Auch and Marlin Auch.
Jeanette Lillian Palmer was born April 23, 1903, at Martin
County, Minnesota, near Granada, to Ray and Mary Spain Palmer.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She received her education in rural schools and attended
Southern Normal School at Springfield, where she received her
diploma and started teaching. She taught in rural schools in
Scotland for five years before she married.
She was united in marriage to Emil Auch on March 8, 1927, at
Yankton. To this union two children were born. The celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary in March, 1977.
She and her family lived at Lesterville a year and in the
spring of 1928 moved to Harrold. In 1932, they moved to a farm
in Hyde County, where they resided until 1978, when she and Emil
moved into Highmore. She began teaching again in 1943 and taught
in rural schools in Hyde County until her retirement in 1967.
After this time, she did substitute teaching. She was an active
member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and always a willing
participant. She was also active in Extension work and was a
member of the Senior Citizens Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one
sister, two brothers and one granddaughter.

Mae Brady was born July 7, 1894, at Senica [sic], Illinois,
to Jim and Anna (Noonan) Brady and died June 16,1987, in Pierre,
South Dakota, at the age of 92 years, 11 months and nine days.
She moved to Esterville, Iowa, with her family and spent
seven years there. In 1902, the family moved to Highmore, where
she attended school. She also attended State Normal School in
Aberdeen and later taught school in Hyde County for many years.
She was baptized in the Catholic faith and was a member of
the Catholic Daughters.
In 1970, she moved to Pierre and at the time of her death
resided in Maryhouse.

EVELYN CLARA OLSON
Evelyn Clara Olson was born April 18 1910 at Tilford, South
Dakota, to Carl M. and Emma Mabel (Jensen) Olson and died March
27, 1987, at her home in Highmore, South Dakota, at the age of
76 years, 11 months and nine days.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was
an active member in the church. She received her education in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She was united in marriage to Orville Olson in 1929, at
Highmore. To this union one daughter, Dolores Eleaner, was born.
In 1933, she was united in marriage to David Olson in
Highmore. They lived in Idaho, Minnesota and South Dakota. They
moved to Stockton, Calif., and resided there during World War
II. In 1946, they moved back to Highmore. They farmed in
Franklin Township until they retired and moved into Highmore. He
died October 25, 1973.
She was united in marriage to John Cherland July 29, 1978, in
Highmore and he died November 26, 1985.
Through the years, she was very involved in the community and
enjoyed to plan and organize activities and entertain in her
home.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands.

Society.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Jack (Mamie) Dailey, Huron;
a niece, Mrs. Michael (Laura) Myers, Springfield, Minnesota and
a nephew, Joe Dailey.

LOUISE KRISMER HARTSHORN
Louise Joan Krismer was born June 18 1897, at Theilman,
Minnesota, to Joseph and Anna (Hoffman) Krismer, the fifth of a
family of seven children, and died March 24, 1987, in Highmore,
South Dakota, at the age of 89 years, nine months and six days.
Her family moved to Lake City, Minn., when she was very young
and it was there she grew to womanhood. Following graduation
from high school, she taught in a rural school in the Lake City
area. The following year, she taught in a rural school near
Clarion, Iowa.
At the close of the school term, she married Hugh Hartshorn
on April 30, 1918. After their marriage, they lived on a farm in
Iowa for two years. During this interval a daughter, Virginia,
was born.
She and her family then moved to a ranch in South Dakota,
situated 20 miles south of Highmore. A son, Fred, and another
daughter, Jane, completed the family. In 1957, Hugh died
following a heart attack. She continued to live on the ranch
with her son until 1972. At that time, failing health made it
necessary for her to retire. She and Fred bought a home in
Highmore, where they lived for the balance of her life.
Her love of antiques progressed from a hobby into a business
she enjoyed for many years, both in her rural home and after
moving into Highmore. She was an active member of the community,
serving on the school board for several years and helping
organize a very active PTA, of which she was a past president.
She was also a member of Eastern Star and PEO.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five
sisters, one brother and one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Jane)
Drescher.

December 26 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elgin. Her son, The Rev.
Jerome Holtzman, officiated with Bishop Paul Dudley of Sioux
Falls, presiding over the final Commendation.
Also concelebrating the Mass were the Rev. Paul Backman,
pastor of St. Mary’s Highmore, Fr. James Doyle, the homilist,
from Sioux Falls; priests from the diocese including: Father
Joseph Mardian, Robert Flannery, Robert Krantz, Joseph Muryphy,
Paul Morgan, Charles Nemmers, Marvin McPhea, Roger Gedietyz,
Edward Burian, James Englert, Don Molumby, Howard Carroll,
assisted by Deacon John Coles, Sioux Falls. Burial was at St.
Mary’s Cemetery, Highmore.
She was born September 13, 1895, in Esterville, Iowa, the
daughter of James and Anna Noonan Brady.
She was a teacher in Hyde County schools for many years, and
served as Clerk of the Courts and Register of Deeds in the
forties.
She moved to Elgin, Illinois from Highmore in 1953, and was a
teacher at St. Laurence Catholic School in Elgin before
retiring.
She was member of St. Laurence Catholic Church; the Altar and
Rosary Society; the NAIM Society and the Catholic Daughters of
America.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Victor, 1942. They were married in 1923 in Highmore.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ellen, three
brothers and four sisters.

Charles F. Ingle was born July 15, 1904, at Prairie du Chien,
Wisconsin, to Joseph and Julie (Stran) Ingle and died April 24,

the age of 82 years, nine months and nine days.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He
received his education in Parochial Schools in Prairie du Chien.
He moved to the Harrold, South Dakota, area in 1919, working as
a construction worker in Hughes County.
He was united in marriage to Ila Parks in Ft. Pierre, South
Dakota, on October 27, 1937. To this union three sons were born.
He was a mall carrier in the Blunt area from 1938-42, before
moving to California, where he owned and operated a water well
company. He moved back to Harrold in 1947 and was a U.S. Mail
contractor until his retirement in 1976. He became a resident of
the Highmore Nursing Home in 1981.
He was preceded in death by one son, James Dennis; one Infant
sister; and three brothers:
Lawrence, George and Cyril.

Casper, Wyoming.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ,

Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening at the Hurd-Laze
Funeral Home, Highmore.

funeral home.
Dale Lee Kerr was born June 28, 1956, in Wichita, Kansas, to
Mr. and Mrs. Jim (Etta James) Kerr. He grew up near Garden
Plain, Kansas, and moved with his family to a farm near Highmore
in 1965. He attended Highmore public schools where he graduated
with honors in 1974. He was active in academics and athletics.
He attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where
he was a member of the Theta Tau Fraternity, and received a BA
in geological engineering in 1978. He was employed by Magcobar
Division of Dresser Industries Inc. of Casper, Wyoming.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, Highmore.

DOROTHY SARVIS KUTZ
Dorothy Marcille Sarvis was born July 26, 1924, in Highmore,
South Dakota, to Ben and Ella (Green) Sarvis and died March 6,
1987, at St. Mary's Hospital, Pierre, South Dakota, at the age
of 62 years, seven months and 10 days. She was the fourth child
in a family of seven brothers and two sisters and received her
education in the Highmore school system.
She married Donald Kutz January 3, 1945, in Highmore. They
spent the first 30 years of their married life on the Kutz
family ranch northwest of Highmore Their children, Diana and
Ginger, were born during that time.
Her role as wife, mother and later as grandmother was the
center of her life.
In 1975, she and her husband retired from the ranch and built
a new home in Highmore. She then had the opportunity to pursue
her interest in ceramics. She became quite knowledgeable in the
ceramics-making process and taught many classes in her home,
until illness forced her to quit.
She was a member of Sedgwick Lutheran Church when living on
the ranch and became a member of Our Savior Lutheran
Church after moving to town.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers:
Edwin, Wayne and James Sarvis.

ADELIA LETTAU
Funeral services were held in the United Methodist Church
this Wednesday for Adelia Lettau who died at the Hand County
Memorial Hospital at the age of 72 years, nine months and 22
days (on December 20, 1981). The Rev. Orland Sloat officiated
and burial was in the Highmore City Cemetery (December 23,
1981).
Pallbearers were Art Marso, Ray Misterek, Robert Houdek,
George Sharp, Harold Aasby and Kenneth Heintz.
Adelia Boger was born February 28, 1908, at Garrison, North
Dakota to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Boger.
She received her education in Garrison. She married Joel R.
Lettau of Whitewood on July 5, 1925, at Washburn, North Dakota.
To this union four children were born.
She and her family lived and farmed in Harrold area until
Joel’s death July 13, 1945, when she moved into Harrold. She
worked in several cafes and was a cook at the Harrold
consolidated School. She moved to Highmore in 1963 where she
worked in cafes and for various families in the area. She was
making her home at the Highmore manor at the time of her death.
Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters, three
brothers, husband and son, Alvin.

DENSEL MASON
JAMESTOWN. N.D. — Services for Densel Mason, 52, former Rapid
City resident, were held at St. James Catholic Church Wednesday
with The Rev. Bernard Pfau officiating. He died Sunday at the
Jamestown Hospital.
Burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Black Hills National
Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D. Services are under the direction of
the Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Mason was born at Highmore, S.D., on March 13, 1935, to
Robert and Clara (Gunderson) Mason. He was educated in Highmore,
and graduated from Highmore High School. In 1953, he entered the
U. S. Army and was stationed at Chicago until his discharge.
He married Joanne Coyle in Rapid City on Nov. 16, 1956. The
couple lived in Rapid City for about one year. In 1958, he moved
to Highmore, and later lived in Miller, S.D.; Park River, N.D.;
Langdon, N.D.; and Virginia, Minn. In 1982, he moved to
Jamestown to serve as president and'
chairman of the board of the First Bank of North Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a
sister.

RUTH HENDERSON MCDONALD MATTHEWS
Ruth Elberta Henderson was born November 23 1896, in Delaware
County, Iowa, to Bert J. and Mary Jane (Patton) Henderson and
died January 11, 1987, at Sun Valley Lodge in Sun City, Arizona,
at the age of 90 years, one month and 18 days.
She moved to Wessington in 1902 with her family and attended
school there and later at Huron College Academy. While teaching
in Highmore, she met W.J (Bill) McDonald and they were married
June 20, 1917 They established their home in Iowa and one son,
Julian, was born to them.
They moved back to Highmore, where they managed the dry goods
department of the McLaughlin Co., later purchasing it. She
continued to operate the McDonald Dry Goods for several years
after the death of Bill in 1951.
While on a world cruise, she met Harry Matthews in New Jersey
and they were married November 4, 1961. In several years, they
moved to Arizona where her husband died in 1972. She sold her
home in 1984 and moved Into the Sun Valley Lodge. She was always
active in community activities, serving on the Board ot
Education, was a member of the Highmore Congregational Church
and later the United Church of Christ in
Sun City. She had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star for
70 years, having served as Worthy Matron, organist and in other
offices.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; her son, Julian,
in 1975; her only brother, Dr. Willard P. Henderson, in 1960;
and her nephew, Dr. Peter B. Henderson, in 1986.

SILAS PETER SAMPSON
Silas Porter Sampson was born May 18, 1899, at Radcliffe,
Iowa, to Sven and Amanda (Quam) Sampson and died February 27,
1986, at the Regional Medical Center in Huron, South Dakota, at
the age of 86 years, nine months and nine days.
He and his family moved to Illinois Township in Hyde County,
South Dakota, in 1907. He grew to manhood and received his
education there. He attended Sunday School and church at the
rural Sedgwick Church.
His growing years were spent on the family farm, helping with
the farm work. Throughout his life, he worked as a farm laborer
in different areas in South Dakota. He had been a resident of
the Highmore Nursing Home for the past several years and thought
of it as his home.
