Jongewaard, Agnes Rose
Nov 16 1922 - Sep 05 2008
Agnes Rose (Walter) Jongewaard, age 85, of rural Wood, SD died at the Platte Health Care Center in Platte, SD on Friday, September 5, 2008. Agnes was born to Herbert M. Walter and Blanche (Whitford) Walter on November 16, 1922 near Kennebec, SD. Agnes lived in the Wood area since she was 14 years old. She married Peter Jongewaard, Jr. on June 22, 1942 in Valentine, NE and lived all of her married life on a ranch south of Wood. Six children were born to this union.
In 1999, two years after her husband’s death in 1997, Agnes entered the Rosebud Care Center in Gregory, SD and lived there until she moved to Platte Care Center in March 2007.
With her “you can do anything you set you mind to” attitude and her strong faith in her Lord, she was able to live a near-normal life for many years despite her crippling health problems. She worked hard with her husband on the ranch while raising their children and maintaining the home, planting a large garden, canning, and butchering.
In 1957, doctors didn’t expect Agnes to live through the night. She prayed that God would grant her years and strength to raise their children. Many times over the years, she survived countless, serious health issues that confounded the medical community. In December 2005, Agnes was diagnosed with colon cancer and told she had less than a year to live. The night before Agnes died, the family asked it there would be a song they could sing; she requested “Nearer My God to Thee.”
She enjoyed her life with her sister, Betty Chamberlain, Spearfish, SD; and her children: Karen (Steve) Christensen, Platte, SD; Kay (Dean) McCarthy, Yankton, SD; Mary Ann (Brad) Davidson, Supply, NC; Kathy (Jerry) Van Vactor, Spearfish, SD; and Richard (Julie) Jongewaard, rural Wood, SD; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, a special friend, Velma McCarthy, and many old friends in the Wood community and new friends that she acquired while living in care centers. She was anxiously awaiting the birth of another great-grandchild who will join the family in November.
Preceding Agnes in death were her husband, Peter Jongewaard, Jr., her parents Herbert and Blanche (Whitford) Walter; three brothers, Herbert (Gene), Harry (Buzz), and Robert Earl; two sisters, Florence Jacobsen and Ferne Emry; a son, Leonard, a granddaughter, LaDawn Christensen and special friend Marceen Golder.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Wood Community Hall. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Wood. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, September 9th at 4:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.
