Kent, Edna (Keever)
? - April 22, 2004
(Transcribed by RB from Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA) - April 27, 2004)

Edna Kent, longtime resident of Contra Costa County, entered into rest April 22, 2004, age 96. She is
survived by two sons, Robert Kent and his wife Marilyn, and Jack Kent and his wife Barbara;
grandchildren, Paula Hewitt, Mike Kent, David Kent, Susan English and Kenneth Kent; great-
grandchildren, Andrea Polk, Mike Hewitt, Devan Hewitt, Samantha Kent, Savanna English, Sierra
English, Logan Kent and Annabella Kent. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth
Kent, in 1989, and her son, Clark Kent, in 1971.

Edna (Keever) Kent was born in Burke, SD, the 4th of a family of 9 children. Her family moved to
Mellette Co., SD and homesteaded there. Edna graduated from White River High School and went on
to obtain a teaching degree. She taught at a country school, having to teach all 12 grades in a one-
room schoolhouse. After a couple of years she decided to change her career and she went back to
school to become a registered nurse. She was employed at Cook County Hospital in Chicago as an
OB/Gyn nurse. She moved to California in the mid-1930's and was followed by a cowboy from her
hometown in SD whose eye she'd caught. Kenneth Kent and Edna were married on August 19, 1936.
They made their home in Concord, CA where they raised their 3 sons. Edna gave up her career
outside the home while her boys were small, but still had steady "employment" as the resident nurse
in the neighborhood, in demand for anything from bandages to allergy shots to unexplained pains and
counseling. She was also the family seamstress and neighborhood barber and cinnamon roll baker.

The Kents retired in 1968 and moved to their acreage in Oregon where they built their retirement
home and were fortunate enough to enjoy many years there. Their home was a stopover for friends
and relatives, as well as the road maintenance men, traveling sales people and any stranger who
was stranded on the road. The coffeepot was always on. After Kenneth's death in 1989, Edna spent
her time between her Oregon home and the homes of her sons. In 1994, she moved to Walnut Creek,
CA to be near her family again. She enjoyed her family and friends and never stopped contributing
what she could: volunteering to bake some cookies, do some mending or rake the leaves. She will be
remembered by all who knew her with love and gratitude to have shared her life. A Memorial Liturgy
will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, April 30, 2004 at Queen of All Saints Church, 2390 Grant St,
Concord. Memorial contributions suggested to the American Diabetes Assoc., PO Box 2680, North
Canton, OH 44720. Ouimet Bros. Chapel
