by Rebecca Washburn, Present Teacher
(transcribed from the Mellette County 1911-1961 book, published August 15, 1961 by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)
Prosperity Flats was a part of District No.2 and of Riverview No.5 before its organization in 1926. It got its name by a motion made by Mrs. Ed Peterson at this meeting. Formerly, it was spoken of as Nebraska Flats.
The first board members were: F. M. Harrison, A. H. Jones, and Mrs. B. H. Dyson.
Ida King was the last teacher in the district before it was divided; and Rena Sterner the first one in the new district. Pauline Krogman, Josephine Delaney, Margarite Crowther, Rose Klein, Mary Hosking, Ardis Sunleaf, James Graham, Lois Curry, and Anna Powers also taught.
In 1943 the school was discontinued, but was resumed in 1961 and has been in session each year since.
