Riverview District No. 22
by Margaret Gregg
(transcribed from the Mellette County 1911-1961 book, published August 15, 1961 by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)
Riverview School District No. 22 was one of three districts formed in June 1928 when Riverview District No.5 was
divided into three separate districts. The school house sets on its present location on what was known as the Hollenback place.
For the first year (the term of 1928-1929) while the newly formed district was getting organized, the children were all transported to White River School with Agnes Stromer, now Mrs. William Jensen, driving the school bus.
The first term of school was held in 1929-1930 with Mercedes Kendall as teacher are Miss Kendall lived in the community about four miles from the school house. Other teachers who taught in Riverview School District No. 22 were Mabel Kent, Carrie Lee Kendall, Lucille Walker, Eldon Hiatt, Pauline Stromer, Thelma McCright, Sara Hanten, Rosa Wacek, Wanita Young, Irma Pigg, Lola Fitch, Gladys Andrews and Florence Branson.
The first board members elected to serve Riverview School District No. 22 were Jennie Stromer, Ruth Hight and Hazel Fitch who served in that capacity for four years from 1928 to 1932. Other board members who were elected later were as follows: John Staat, Mrs. John Staat, Hattie Hight, Paul Storey, Pauline Stromer, Jennie Stromer, Margaret Gregg, Dolores Furrey, Marvin Williams and Lester Stromer.
The enrollment of the district became so small that to further the educational benefits of the children, the voters of the district voted to discontinue classes and transport the children to White River School. So the last classes were held in the school term of 1948-1949.
Although the life of Riverview School District No. 22 was comparatively short, it is proud to have had a part in the education of people of various professions; namely, teachers, bank clerks, pharmacists, homemakers, mothers, farmers, ranchers, Merchant Marines, Air Force officers, mechanics, stenographers, secretaries and others.
