(transcribed from the Mellette County 1911-1961 book, published August 15, 1961 by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)

The first school was held in 1914 in a homesteaders shack on the SW 1/4, Sec. 7 Township 41-25, in Mellette County,
which then was a part of Wood Independent District No.1.
This building was about eight by twelve, made of tarpaper covered shiplap with a shingled roof. They had a qualified teacher, Chester Thayer.
In 1915 the present Rosebud Valley School was built and was taught by Blanche Meyer. Some early teachers were: Cornelia McDonald, Gladys Sheldon, Bessie Berry, Martha Blankinhagen, Mrs. Lou Simpkins and Mrs. Clara DeVorss.
In 1926 a second school was started in Dick Huber's house which was on the present Tobias Herman farm. Lillian Gustafson was the first teacher, followed by Clara DeVorss.
Huber moved his house to Mosher in the spring of 1929 so the term was finished there. A building was moved on the Jesse Burn's farm in the fall of 1929 and called the Burns School. Edith Sinkler taught that year. School was held in this building until the break away from the Wood Independent District in 1931.
A building of Mr. Root's was moved on the Yellow Fox place near the bridge. Sometime later an old Indian house from Bad Nation Community was moved, first on the Yellow Fox place and later on Mrs. Hoy's land. It remained there until 1951 when it was moved to its present location on the NE 1/4  Sec. 14-41-25 and is still known as the Burns School.
The teachers in this district from 1931 to 1935 were: 1931-1932, Mrs. Elsie Trosen; Mrs. George Worcester - East Rosebud, and Mrs. Lou Simpkins - Rosebud Valley. 1932-1933, Ruth Dundell, Pearl Hansen, Mrs. Mary Worcester; 1933-1934, Arleen VanShaack and Marcella Burtz; 1934-1935, Esther Friese, Marie Friese and Richard Horton.
