Schmidt Surname
George Schmidt
By Fred Schmidt
(Transcribed, with permission from the Mellette County Historical Society, from "Mellette County 1911-1961" published by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)

George Andrew Schmidt was born on the reservation in what now is Todd County. He lived in Mellette County several years before establishing himself on his original allotment in the Purewater District in 1899. After building his home, he lived there until his death in 1944.
He was an outstanding mixed blood Indian in Mellette County for various reasons known to many. When White River was fighting for the county seat, he was instrumental in obtaining many signers. He was one of the few Indians chosen to serve on a jury in South Dakota.
To his own Indian people, he was a patriotic man. He informed and advised them on their right to vote. He taught them what it meant to be a citizen. His people knew him well as a man they could go to with the assurance they could go away with their problems solved or obtain the advice, consolation, and help they sought. He was well remembered for his industriousness, kindness and generosity to those who needed help.
He, himself, was a staunch democrat but respected those whose beliefs were different.
