Location:
Section 7, Township 40N, Range 28W - Pure Water Township
History:
The cemetery is located 2+ miles west of Ted Schmidt's farm on a cut bank above Horse Creek. Without Ted's help, we wouldn't have found it. There are very few signs left of it having been a cemetery. Milo did count about 19 sites but there are no stones, fences, or other identifying marks - just grass.
Spotted Elk Cemetery was established around 1880 by Spotted Elk.
In his 1940 Grave Survey Report, Carl Johnson said, "Its appearance is poor, there are no fences around it, and no markers on any graves - part are sunken in. There is no road to the cemetery and to get there you have to travel by foot about a mile. The cemetery is abandoned and it is seldom that anyone goes there." Abandoned around 1914.
