Washington District No. 26
(transcribed from the Mellette County 1911-1961 book, published August 15, 1961 by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)

The Prairie View School was built on land owned by Daniel Schmidt in 1918. School opened in December of 1918 with Robbie Kephart as teacher. Blanche Kaufman taught the school in 1919 and 1920. Henrietta Waack taught it the next three years.
The pupils in 1919-1920 were Bertha Schmidt (Mrs. Joe Kaiser); Milton and Otilla (Mrs. Paul Kasat) Schelske; Carl, Lena, Gotfried, Oscar, and Anna Schelske; Helena  (Mrs. Otto Huber), Lydia, Amalia, and Nora Schmidt; Albert, Herbert, Gerhardt and Edgar Waack.
In 1928 an effort was made to move the schoolhouse which was unsuccessful. The school was closed and the children were assigned to attend a school located south of Kary, with Mildred Beard as teacher. In 1929 L. L. Jensen taught the school south of Kary and Prairie View was opened again with Gertrude Oesch as teacher. The school house was moved in 1930 and Dora Keever was hired to teach. She taught for two terms; a Miss Harrison succeeded her, followed by Hilda Becker.
Until 1930 Prairie View School was operated by Blackpipe District.
About this time an effort was made by the patrons in the eastern part of Blackpipe district, to form a separate district. The exact date has not been determined. Apparently by 1934 the division was definite and Washington School District No. 26 came into being. Otto Bertsch; Fred Merchen and Herbert Waack were the first board members.
Although they may not be in the correct order, these are the teachers that followed Hilda Becker: Ida Banek (Karlin), Annette Cannon, Rose Tiedeman, Anne Sammons, Ed Hanten, Dewey Pechota, the Rev. G. Walters, Mrs. Andrews, Luella Ring, Mary Waterman, Marvin Ehly, Gertrude Ring, Charity Epperly, Iva Hougham, Alma Waack, Alice V. Coffee, Betty Starkjohann, Mildred Mechaley, Mildred Kellogg, and again Luella Ring, who is the present teacher.
Of all the pupils who attended the school Mildred Waack (Mechaley) is the only one who came back to teach.

Danville School
(transcribed from the Mellette County 1911-1961 book, published August 15, 1961 by the Mellette County Centennial Committee)

In 1930 a small schoolhouse was built to accommodate some of the pupils in what is now the southern part of Washington School District No. 26. It was not operated for very long and who the teachers were is difficult to determine. Dewey Pechota taught there before he taught at Prairie View.
The schoolhouse was moved to the site at Prairie View in 1940 and was used as a teacherage. After several years it was attached to the present structure. Part of it is being used as an entry to the schoolhouse and part of it is available for a teacherage.
The William Kary, Jr., children and the Ernest Weiss children were some of the pupils who attended the school where it was originally located.
