The Hickman Pioneer, Friday, May 31, 1878 Transcribed by Rita Morgan
Mr. Wm. Phillips, of the 3rd district, living about five miles from town, accidentally killed his sister-in-law, Miss Cully; aged 17 or 18 years, last Saturday afternoon, under the following circumstances: Mr. Phillips who has been an invalid with a severely cut foot since the morning of the 24th of April, was amusing himself on Saturday by shooting from his house with his rifle at birds in the trees adjacent. He took aim at a bird through the window and just as he fired, Miss Cully, who was out in the yard, passed the window, and the fatal bullet crashed through her head at the temples, and she fell dead. Another account is, that he was sitting in a chair and aiming his gun through the door, when Miss Cully suddenly stepped into the door from the yard, and Mr. Phillips, in attempting to throw up the gun, accidentally discharged it, the ball passing through her head, as stated above. Under either state of facts, the accident was a most shocking one, and Mr. Phillips is almost crazed at its occurrence. - Shelbyville Gazette
