Mt. Carmel
United Methodist Church

Benton County TN

Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church was organized in 1854. It is located on Mt. Carmel Road, north 64 Sawyers Mill. A small hewn-log building housed the congregation for many years. J.H. Williams, John Crossnoe, and J.W.H. Presson and his wife all deeded land to the church. Material, labor, and supplies were donated by members of the congregation. In 1901, the trustees acquired the graveyard area for a burial ground.

Original photo came from Tennie P. Bennett of Camden for supplying this picture of a revival in progress at Mt. Carmel sometime around 1905. This house was at one time the residence of a distant relative of Tennie Bennett, namely Allen Presson, father of Nancy Jane and Presson Bridges. James Allen Presson is holding the Bible and was Allen Presson's grandson.

Left to right, back row are Ezra Presson Wiseman, Tennie Presson Bennett, Mary Nancy, Ruth Ballard Smith, Frank Johnson, Matilda Johnson who resided at the residence at the time. Harrison Presson, Henry Stigall and Margaret Stigall, a young minister named Lett, wife Ruth and daughter Hope, Orville Stigall, Virgie Ballard Stigall and Sally Bonds Totty.

Front row, kneeling, left to right, Lonnie Wiseman, Mr. and Mrs. William Allen Presson, Jim Harper, (unknown), Billie Ballard, George Presson, Jeannine Allen Pressor, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and Artie Elmore. First person seated in front row is unknown and others left to right are Rev. Mathis, O.B. Johnson and Violet Stigall Blakely. Thanks for supplying this fine picture. Thanks too, to all the fine folks who continue to make the Bank of Camden your bank. When you need a banking service, see us. We'll all be happy that you did.
