Tennessee Mob Kills Two Today

Ed Hartley and son George, recently convicted of manslaughter in connection with the killing of Connie Hartley, nephew of Ed Hartley, in Benton County last February, were taken from the jail by a mob at Camden early today and shot to death in a vacant lot 200 yards from the jail. The mob numbered fifty. They appeared at the jail with blackened faces, overpowered Sheriff Flowers, seized the Hartleys, marched them a short distance away and riddled them with bullets. The Hartleys were awaiting the outcome of a motion for a new trial of their cases.

Nashville Tenn Oct. 20, 1922 Father and Son Lynched Tennessee Mob Shoots Men Convicted of Manslaughter Two men, father and son, recently convicted of manslaughter in Benton County last February, were taken from the county jail at Camden early this morning and shot to death in a vacant lot 200 yards from the jail. The prisoners, Ed Hartley and his son George, were held in connection with the murder of Connie Hartley, nephew of Ed Hartley. Between twenty-five and fifty men with faces blacked, appeared at the jail, and overpowering Sheriff Flowers, took the Hartleys and marched them to the vacant lot, where they riddled them with bullets. At the time of the killing of Connie Hartley last Febraury his father, John Hartley, was seriously wounded. Ed and George Hartley were conficted of voluntary manslaughter on Sept. 22 and made a motion for a new trial. This was the first case in Benton County's history of prisoners being taken from authorities and shot.
