The Alston family moved into Carroll County TN in 1905 from Benton County. John Rufus Alston (12-31-1831) and Martha Ann Beasley Alston (9-30-1833) lived near the Obion River close to Union Academy Church. He was a farmer and a brick laywer. His mother Rebecca, was born in VA in 1810. John Rufus Alston fought in the 14th Calvary Co F TN with Nathan Bedford Forrest. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Billy Hardin Cemetery in Benton Co. The name Alston has been spelled several ways, but was changed to Austin in 1910 at the Carroll County Courthouse.
