ANNA PIRTLE , 24, of Bolivar, a member of the National Champion Bethel University Renaissance Southern Gospel Quartet, has died after falling ill while on tour, according to Bethel President Bob Prosser. Her funeral was held at Bethel University Gymnasium at 1 p.m. Monday with burial in Parker Cemetery in Whiteville. Pirtle, who was the only female member of Bethel’s award winning gospel quartet group, fell ill with a pulmonary condition during the group’s spring break tour in Texas and was admitted to Huguley Memorial Medical Center in Forth Worth hospital where she remained until the time of her death March 18. “Our campus is deeply saddened,” Prosser said. “Anna was so well-known by our students, by our faculty and staff, by our community and by the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination. She touched so many with her sweet and happy personality. And having served in the Re Bethel University Renaissance Southern Gospel Quartet naissance choir and as a stand out member in the gospel quartet, she was an effective and passionate ambassador for Bethel.” “Our hearts go out to her family, and we lift up prayers on their behalf during this difficult time.” Pirtle, a former Bethel University Homecoming queen, also acted in Renaissance theatre productions and was an alumna of Lambda Sigma sorority and had volunteered to be the new co-advisor for the new sorority Zeta Nu Theta. She had graduated in December 2009 and was continuing with the gospel quartet for this semester by popular request. Prosser said that the school’s chaplain and other counselors have been on hand to talk with students. “This is such a close-knit campus, and I think it’s fair to say that we’ve all been affected by this very sad news.”
