HUGH E. DAVENPORT

of Crossville, Tenn., was born at Grassy Cove on February 7, 1904, and at the present time is Postmaster at Crossville, Tennessee. English descent. Single. Father's name, Good Hugh Davenport, farmer. Mother's maiden name, Laura Brown. Paternal grandparents: Claiborne and (____) Davenport; maternal grandparents: J. S. Brown and Mary Foster. Attended Cumberland County high school. Member of the Methodist Church, Mason, Odd Fellow, and a Democrat. He was elected Circuit Court Clerk in 1926, at which time he was one of the youngest county officials in the entire state. He was re-elected to the same office in 1930 without opposition. He was elected in a strong Republican county although he was a Democrat. He resigned the office of County Court Clerk in 1933, and he was appointed Postmaster by the Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 25, 1933, in which capacity he had served ever since. He served in 1931 as secretary to J. Ridley Mitchell, U.S. Congressman from this district.
