Lawyer; born of English-German descent, November 5, 1855, in Cumberland County, Tenn.; married, December 5, 1887, to Mary Alice Cline. Son of John Washington and Mahuoloa P. (Narramore) Brown; paternal grandparents James and Joanna (Hayes), maternal grandparents, Fielding M. and Marthe (Taylor) Narramore. Attended public schools of Cumberland County; Grant University, Athens, Tenn.; B.S. degree 1886. Member M.E. Church; Republican; Mason; F. & A.M.; Past Grand Master of State of Tennessee, Masonic Grand Lodge. Reared on a farm; in his early life taught school for several years; became Supt. of Public Instruction for Cumberland Co.; former Clerk and Master of The Chancery Court of Cumberland Co.; was at one time City Atty. of Harriman, Tenn. Served for a number of years as Circuit Judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Tenn. Moved to Athens in 1910, where he now lives. Notwithstanding his advanced age, he is one of the most active men of his section and has a large law practice in McMinn and adjoining counties. Was a lay delegate from the Holston Conference to the General Conference of the M. E. Church held in Des Moines, Iowa in 1920, and to the General Conference held in Springfield, Mass in 1924. He is the father of six children: - Mabel C., Bethel C., of Cleveland, Tenn.; Foster C. of New Orleans; Mrs. Florence Cooke of Athens; Mrs. Lela Stephens of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Mrs. Vera Buck of Knoxville.
