Funeral: The mayor of a small West Tennessee town will be buried Wednesday after passing away from a bout with cancer Sunday night. Scotts Hill Mayor Carey Johnson will be buried following a funeral at Scotts Hill Church of Christ. Since 2006 the 76 year old served as mayor of the town that lies in Henderson and Decatur Counties. Vice-Mayor Bill Snider will serve as interim mayor until August's election. After graduating from Scotts Hill High School in 1952, Johnson attended Memphis State University before joining the US Army. Johnson returned to his high school alma mater during the 1960's where he taught and coached the boys and girls basketball teams. In 1969 Johnson began working as a field representative with what is now the Farm Services Agency and retired in 2004. Johnson leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Ruth Anne, son Craig and three brothers. Johnson wasn't the type to seek recognition whether it was as an educator, mayor or working with farmers, said his niece Carol Brasher. He was beloved by his former students and athletes and enjoyed keeping in touch with them, she said. "It's just so hard to put into words, he was the person that was always there when there was a need," Brasher said. "I think the visitation and funeral will show the outpouring for all the things he did for people that nobody knew about. The main thing I will remember is he was always the person who stood quietly in the back of the room and made sure everything was done right.
