Sheriff of Hardeman County, born at Dallas, N. C., July 7, 1880; Scotch-Irish descent; son of Jasper Richard and Elizabeth (Whiteside) Long; married January 19, 1903 to Sallie Pirtle, to which union have been born four sons; -Roy Clifford, John Elbert, Frank Bennett, and George Richard who died on August 23, 1934. Member of the Baptist Church; Democrat; Mason; Royal Arch; W.O.W.; Chamber of Commerce. Educated in the public schools of North Carolina, Fayette, and Hardeman Counties, Tennessee. Elected Sheriff of Hardeman County in August 1936; serving his first term, he is regarded by the people of his county as an excellent peace enforcement officer. For many years he has been very active in all affairs which have been for the betterment of his county. Prior to his election as sheriff, he was engaged in general farming and livestock raising, in which pursuit he is still engaged. His hobby is bird hunting.
