JOHN DANIEL STEPHENS

Register of Deeds of Hardeman County, born February 5, 1885, in Hardeman County; descent Irish; married January 1, 1908; Myrtle Maxwell, who died March 6th, 1935; secondly, Lillie Mai Macon January 20, 1937. He is the son of Jacob Thomas and Mary Jane (Hannis) Stephens et ux; maternal grandparents C. and (___) (Carryway) Hannis; attended the public schools of Hardeman County. Member of the Church of Christ; Democrat. Elected to the office he now holds in August 1926; has been twice re-elected and nominated for a fourth term without opposition. The condition of the affairs of his office are of the very best, which is evidenced by the continued trust the people impose in him. Prior to his election to office he was engaged in farming and is still operating a farm in connection with his official duties. He is the father of three children: --Mrs. Marie Black, James T., and Kenneth. His father soldiered under Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Civil War. His hobby is hunting.
