Obituaries

Charles C. Alexander - Departed this transitory life, at the residence of his Father, in Hawkins county, in the 26th year of his age, CHARLES C. ALEXANDER, after an illness of only 36 hours, supposed to be billious pleurisy.
The subject of this brief notice, was not a member of any church, nor was he a professor of religion - but a young man of the very best morals, and of as unblemished character as any within the bounds of his extensive acquaintance. His seat at church was seldom vacant. He cherished not the principles of infidelity, of opposition to any follower of the Saviour, nor yet sectarian exlusiveness or narrow-minded bigotry. His charity embraced the interests and prosperity of all denominations, whether of Paul or Apollos. He was gentlemanly and unobtrusive in his deportment, and consequently enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.
It has been remarked in the outset of this brief notice that Mr. A. was not a professor of religion in his life time, but it is believed that he obtained joy in believing, ere he departed this life. He died perfectly resigned to his fate, and so expressed himself taking an affectionate leave of his friends.
To conclude, the writer of this humble tribute, is actated by no desire for extravagant eulogy, but has merely stated the simple unadorned truth concerning one with whom he was acquainted, and whose peaceful end, not to say happy exit should stimulate others to go and do likewise.

Carson Brewer, a well-known East Tennessee writer and former Hawkins County resident, passed away January 15 at Saint Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville due to complications with pneumonia. Born in 1920 in the Luther community of Hancock County, where his father was postmaster and storekeeper, Brewer, age 82, rose to become one of Tennessee's most respected journalists and writers, beginning his career as a student-writer for The Rogersville Review in the late 1930's. Early in his life, Brewer's parents moved from Luther to Hawkins County where he later graduated from Rogersville High School. It was at RHS where Brewer got his first taste of journalism. In a 1971 interview Brewer said, "I had always wanted to be a newspaperman. The high school student body elected me correspondent for the weekly Rogersville Review." After graduation Brewer attended Maryville College where he was a staff member on the school newspaper The Highland Echo. However, Brewer's college career was short-lived as the United States entered World War II. Following several tours of duty, Brewer came back to East Tennessee where he worked as a reporter for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, and attended the University of Tennessee. He remained at the News-Sentinel until his retirement in 1985, but continued writing columns for the newspaper until his health prevented him from doing so last year. Brewer received numerous honors during his career. In 1980, he was appointed to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Commission and more recently he was honored by the town of Norris with a hiking trail named in his honor. He also won various journalism awards in his lifetime like the Scripps Howard Foundation Edward J. Meeman Conservation Award; the Knoxville Writers' Guild's inaugural Career Achievement Award; the Kentucky-Tennessee Section of Society of American Foresters' Forestry Recognition award; the Journalism award of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers; a special citation from Maryville College; first place for local columns by UPI Tennessee Association of Newspapers; an honor by the East Tennessee area of the Tennessee Association of Conservation Districts for public service to conservation for columns written on the loss of prime farmland for agricultural use; and the Society of Professional Journalists' Golden Press Card award. Brewer was also honored at the Front Page Follies where a scholarship fund was created in his name. Brewer was known throughout Tennessee for his columns about the Smoky Mountains and the environment. He was also an avid hiker, publishing a book in 1962 titled Hiking the Great Smokies that has sold more than 95,000 copies to date. The book was re-released last year. In 1981 a book of Brewer's selected columns about the Great Smoky Mountains was also published. Among others, Brewer has also written a folk history of the Little Tennessee Valley called Valley So Wild with his wife, Alberta. Brewer has a son, Carson Trulock "Kit" Brewer of Nashville, and a grandson, Coleman.
