The Waller-Douglas Cemetery is nearly as old as Henderson County which was opened for settlement in 1820. The Waller scame to the farm on which this cemetery is located between 1825-1826 (from census reports). Amost J. Waller an dhis wife Easter/Esther came from N.C. They brought Amos B. 6 and Giles, 2 with them. Another son, Nathan was born later. According to the 1850 census, Giles, a physician, was 26, born in N.C. Nathan was 25, born in TN. Sometime around 1850 a family in covered wagon was going west. Their baby became very ill. Learning that Giles Waller was a physician, they brought the baby to him. The baby died at the Waller home, and the family was given permission to bury it up on the hill that became the Waller burying ground (told to me by O.A. Douglas, handed down). The oldest marked grave is that of Blaney Waller, son of Amos and Easter, 1850. Two marked graves may be misleading. Amos J. Waller's tombstone and that of Jesse Williams read: Lt. Amos J. Waller S.N.O. Mil War of 1812. And Jesse Williams TN Mil. War of 1812. Amos J. did not die int that war, for he deeded land to all his living children in 1856. There is no information on Jesse Williams. He could have been a friend. Only two families in these 150 years have claimed the land on which the cemetery is located. James G. Douglas (deceased), father of Oscar A. Douglas (deceased) bought this part of the farm from the Wallers. After this, the name became teh Waller-Douglas and the Douglas family began to bury their dead here. Just this year, Mrs. Oscar Douglas deeded the cemetery to the Waller-Douglas Cemetery Association. Mrs. Douglas reasoned that in future years someone could buy the farm who had no interest in the people buried here. Many of the persons buried here are descendants of teh Wallers, namely; Dennison, White, Howard, Coleman, Lindsey, Parish, Carrington and others. The Millers came to Bargerton from Middleburg many years ago. They have buried their dead here since 1909. Other names are Jordan, Adams, Coffman, Peterson and Pendergrass. A road climbs a steep hill then encircles the cemetery. A thick forest growth edges the circle road. Its a little world all its own with only one doorway, the road down the hill. Yet, its a wonderful place to spend a quiet afternoon with one's ancestors, wondering what their life was like some 150 years ago. |
