BONNIE SHERRILL CHALK
died at his home, as was his desire, on Monday March 14, 2011. The son of the late John Presley and Mary Julia Ruth Chalk, he ws born August 29, 1913. He was also preceded by his wife of 56 years, the mother of his 4 children, Mary Nell Brumley Chalk; his brother, James Rual Chalk; sisterIrene Lois Faulkner Howard; an infant sister who died at birth and wife, Addie Essary Chalk. He is survived by his children, John Allen, Mary Linda Kelley, Jimmy L. and Jack; his eight grandchildren.
Mr. Chalk was the oldest surviving member of the 1933 LHS Tiger Football team. His skills led to a scholarship to Freed Hardeman College. The FHC football teams undefeated season remains unchallenged. At FHC, he met his wife, Mary Nell Brumley who was attending on a basketball scholarship. After WW II began, the call went out for men with experience on heavy equipment to join the n ewly formed Construction Battalion, or "SeaBee's", as they began to be called. Bonnie and his boss, who were working on a Mississippi section of the Natchez Trace Parkway volunteered. He spent most of his Seabee service in the Aleutian Islands, stationed at Dutch Harbor, Alaska. After his discharge during the trip home his battalion was diverted to Wake Island to repair the airfield there and bury large tanks for holding high octane aircraft fuel.
Bonnie became a "pipeliner", working in several states and international locations, including Oman, Peru and Ecuador. He drove a school bus route for a fewyears. During this period, he used his bus to transport LHS sports teams to their games as well as the Lady Lions basketball team of Freed Hardeman. As a young teenager when his father J.P. Chalk, was Henderson County's sheriff, he lived in the jail with his parents, the custom of the time. A local newspaper had an account of an escape attempt by two inmates following lunch time as their trays were being collected by Bonnie and his brother, Rual. Both young men lost no time in alerting their father, going after the two inmates who were apprehended and returned to jail. Mr. Chalk continued operating heavy equipment into his 80's. Many roads in and around Henderson County, as wellas numerous lots for new houses, churches, or business are part of his "handiwork". Perhaps Mr. Chalk's most indelible impact is how much he was admired and appreciated as a long time member of Juno Church of Christ and a good neighbor in Juno and surrounding communities.
