FANNIE HALL - On Thursday night of last week or rather on Friday morning at the hour of 12:30, the Death Angel visited Lexington and took one whom to know was to love and respect. Miss Fannie had been in ill health for several months and but a short time ago had returned from Oklahoma when she went to visit relatives and in hope of bettering her health. But alas, the grim reaper had marked her for his prey and her loved ones could but submit in resignation to a loss which seems irreparable. The death bed of Fannie Hall was surrounded by all the surviving members of her immediate family - her only brother, Ed J. Hall of Jackson, Mississippi, and her sisters, Miss Amanda Hall and Mrs. W.A. (Ida ) Frazier. On these devoted ones the blow fell with crushing force, possibly heaviest on Miss Amanda, for the two unmarried sisters had lived in intimacy. All were devoted and looked up to Miss Fannie and during all the years of her life in Lexington her amiable disposition and admirable character won and held the friendship of all. With the simplest ceremony her body was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon, but she had willed it. We are confident she has gone to a better world. JEWELL HALL - Lexington and the whole community were shocked when the news became known of the horrible accieent which caused the sudden death of Jewell Hall, Tuesday morning when she was hit by a Southbound freight train, Peter Gullett, engineer, and Wilbur Keeton fireman. Jewell the 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Riley Hall, who lived about two miles north of town, in company with her younger sister, Opal and Clara Hays were on their way to high school, cutting across the back way which shortens the route when after they had crossed the railroad, Jewell discovered she had forgotten something and started back home some 200 yards distance; the other girlsgoing on to school, and part of the story is that they did not know what had happened until sent for even though their attention had been attracted by the stopping of the train. It is not known how the accident happened, but the most plausible reason is one of two, that she didn't see nor hear the train, as the accident happened in a deep cut with a curve near and her sister said she was reading a theme she was to hand in at school. The other is that as she had to return home and would be late if she waited for the opassing of the train, she tried to cross the tracks ahead of the train and in her hurry and excitement stumbled and fell. And the statement of the fireman, Wilbur Keeton, who said she seeme dto stumble as she stepped upon the track, bears out this version. The badly mangled body was taken to the depot an there turned over to undertaker, Royal Pafford, who took charge for the purpose of preparing it for burial. The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church, Rev. Fleetwood Ball officiating, followed by burial at Antioch. Jewell was a lovely girl and her tragic death brings poignant gried to many hearts. She is survived by her parents and four sisters, Ruth, Opal, Marie and Edna.

ASA NELSON HAYS who was better known by the name of Black Hawk Hays, is dead. He died recently in Decatur County, where he had resided for a number of years. He was for a long time a citizen of this county and acquired the name of Black Hawk Hays by reason of his bravery in the Indian Wars. In a battle with them he was shot through and through by an Indian brave, recovered from his wounds and was ever afterwards called Black Hawk in honor of his bravery and courage in fighting that warlike tribe of fiery savages. He was also a Federal Captain in the late war, and at the date of his death, he was drawing a pension granted to him by a grateful country on account of wounds received in the Indian wars. Capt. Hays was in many respects a remarkable man. He was brave and generous and full of energy, and had he possessed the advantages of an education, he doubtless would have reached with some of the most illustrious men of his day. But now his warfare is over and the old soldier sleeps his last sleep.

HAZEL (DENNISON) HOWARD - The citizens of Lexington have not received a greater shock than on last Friday, when the news went from mouth to mouth and over the telephone wires, at about 2 o'clock, that Mrs. Hazel, the beloved wife of Charlie Howard, had just breathed her last. Events of the morning had somewhat prepared many for the worst, but as in all cases, the shock was great when it came. Those who stood by the bedside of that young, lovely and lovable wife and three times a mother, say that she died as she had lived - gently and sweetly. This sad and seemingly untimely death was the culmination of an illness of nearly three weeks duration, with typhoid fever and complications, caused perhaps by the fact that for twenty-one days she had sat by the bedside of her little son, almost without relief day or night, because she could not bear to be away from her then only baby, little John Dennison about two years old. The funeral was held in the home Saturday afternoon, Rev. Fleetwood Ball officiating, and the remains carried to Lexington Cemetery. Hazel Nema, second child and elder daughter of James R. and Mrs. Lovie Dennison was born in Lexington September 4, 1891. On May 3, 1907 at the tender age of about 16 years she was happily married to Charlie H. Howard, son of C.F. and Mrs. Cornelia Howard. To the union three children were born, the last being buried in the same grave with the mother. To know Hazel Howard was to love her. Her sweetness of disposition, her purity of soul, won all who came in contact with her. Truly it is hard to give her up, to see her cut down in the very flower of young wifehood, motherhood and womanhood, but a second thought ought to show us that we should not, if we could, bring her back from the home on High to be the inevitable sorrows of this world. We believe that her sweet soul is resting in peace and we pray that God, in his own good way, may console those hearts that are torn and bleeding by the great sorrow of her loss.

JANE HOWARD - January 8, 1913, marked the close of the eventful life of Mrs. Jane Howard, who would have been 82 years of age in the month of May 1913. Her husband, Richard Howard, has been dead for 34 years and "Aunt Jane" had been an invalid for several years, but her most striking characteristics were her gentle disposition and untiring patience. One child went before her and three who remain, dr. Ben Howard, Mrs. Bytha Johnson and Dr. Lafayette Howard and her sister, Mrs. Ada White, were loving and devoted and made life very lovely for her -- Flossie Waller

SAMUEL HOWARD - On November 27, 1823, there was born to William and Ursula Howard, in Anson County, N.C., a son to whom the parents gave the single name, Samuel. In 1826 William Howard and family moved to the then comparatively new country, Tennessee, and settled in Henderson County on the farm now owned by James N. Howard, north of Lexington. Thee William Howard adn wife lived the remainder of their days and there our subject Samuel grew to manhood, lived to the great age of 82 and died at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 1905. October 28, 1847 Samuel married Mary Timberlake and to that union were born six children - yet surviving. Mary the good wife, died October 3, 1864. December 7, 1870 Mr. Howard was married to Betty Hinkle and to him she has ever been a loving helpmate. To this union but one child was born and that little life went out in early infancy. On September 23, 1895 Mr. Howard professed faith in God and joined the M.E. Church, South. Samuel Howard was for many years a strong man in the civic and business affairs of Lexington and Henderson County. While he never sought to push himself to the front, he had been a justice of the peace in his time and for several terms filled the office of County Trustee. The best interests of the county were guarded by him and on all occasion she was the special friend and advocate of the school children of the county.

Mr. Howard was one of the most conservative of men. He had strong opinions, but allowed others what he claimed for himself and respected the convictions of all men. He was a peacemaker and never failed to advise every man who sought his advice to keep on good terms with his fellows at whatever sacrifice necessary. Shakespeare said, “The evil that men do lives after them: the good is oft interred with their bones.” We all do evil, it is a part of our humanity, but in such a life as that of “Uncle Sam,” as he was affectionately addressed by many, his faults and foibles were hardly remembered while he lived, so tenderly was he loved for his great big heart and his generous hand which was ne’er closed to the needs of others less fortunate than himself. When we first came to Lexington in March 1884, Mr. Howard was then a gray-headed man, but active and so he continued through nearly all the years since. To meet him has always been like sunshine breaking through the clouds on a dark day. He never failed to have a jolly laugh and encouraging word for all. By and by when his limbs began to fail him, he recognized it as warning that his time was not long for this world and so expressed himself, but always as cheerfully as if he were growing younger instead of approaching dissolution. Some of his children are themselves growing gray and they have the sympathy of everybody who knew what an indulgent father Uncle Sam was, but to the bereaved wife, who has for nearly thirty-five years almost worshipped him, an especial and tender sympathy is felt. May God strengthen her in the dark days of her sorrow. Mr. Howard left but one surviving brother, Dr. John H. [Howard] and no sister. Between Sam and John there was ever the brotherly love that should be. Mr. Howard was a Mason and the strongest tenet of that order was his life’s practice. He was always a Democrat, even in the days of the old Whig party and never once did he fail in his allegiance to his principles. Through all the coming years the memory of him will live green in the memory of all who knew and survive him. May his soul rest in peace.--W. V. Barry
