Allen - Springer

Married at the residence of Mr. C. C. Camp, in Counsil's Bend, near this place, on the 9th inst., by Rev. ______ Hanlin, Mr. T. J. Allen and Miss Cassie Springer.

Another elopement!  About dark the groomsman and companions left Mr. Polk Fielding's, a neighbor -- where they met -- and riding up to the residence of the bride's father, gave a signal whereby the young lady knew they were ready.  She was, at the time, in the dining room, and without a word, rushed out and mounted a horse and the whole party started at lightening speed for the designated place.  The old folk by this time, had taken in the situation, and Mr. Springer, her father, started in hot pursuit.  The young folk arrived at Mr. Camp's in a few minutes but before they could get under headway the report of the old gentleman's arrival threw them into confusion and they had to fly to the woods to avoid him.  They waited out in the snow for several hours until the fond parent took his departure, when the young folk returned to Mr. Camps and married.  We congratulate this happy couple on their determination and success.  May it ever be thus.

Elder John Nicks had quite a lively time a few days ago, trying to solemnize the rites of matrimony between a Mr. Watkins and a Miss Dodson, a daughter of Esquire Bill.  It seems that there were some objections to the marriage, so the groom mounted a mule, took the girl behind him, without saddle or blanket, attendants mounted in the same manner, and with the Elder bringing up the rear with a boy behind him, off they went for uncle Neal's, and after a jolly ride, they were married in style.

Walker - Cotton

Shady Grove - Married at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. S. W. Cotton, Mr. T. B. Walker to Miss Lula Bell Cotton, by Rev. J. G. Bolton.  After the nuptial knot was tied the usual congratulations, a few presents were given; among the number I noted the following; by Mr. W. D. Miller, pair of vases; pair by Mrs. Bettie Hoover; one by Mrs. G. B. Miller, and a handsome family record, by Mrs. Anna E. Deen.  Miss Bell is one of Shady's most accomplished young lady teachers.  She is much loved by all who know her.  We congratulate Mr. Walker in winning such a prize.  They were married at 7 o'clock, and soon after they took their departure for the Crescent City, to take in the World's Fair.  May their future be a pleasant and enjoyable one.

Duncan - Allen

Pinewood - Last Thursday, about 3 o'clock, our jolly friend W. A. (Dick) Duncan, in a quiet way came into our village and stole Miss Alice Allen, who was claiming to be helping "Aunt Hulda' prepare the the near future.  While the groom and bride and a few select friends seemed happy, the bride's parents looked as if they had been eating green persimmons, and our clever friend John J. Brown "looked so sick."  We hope he will recover soon.  Dick seemed deeply in earnest in the undertaking, met Capt. H. Petty, Esq., on the highway and wouldn't agree for him to go home for this wedding garment, saying: "the old folks may find it out".

Conley - Totty

Pinewood - About 5 o'clock the same p.m., as was expected our clever friend C. L. Conley and his bridal party came in style, and doubtless felt the importance of the occasion, and about 6 o'clock, they marched to the residence of the Misses Totty, where friend Charley and Miss Hulda Totty were soon united in marriage by H. Petty, Esq., in his usual and impressive style.  We congratulate friend, C., in winning the hand of this precious jewel.  While he might be called an expert in handling brick, mortar, etc., we thing he displayed more taste this time than he ever did in his mechanical profession.  He is too well known in our country to need any comment, and we are thankful that our friend Miss. H., has cast her lot in such good care.  May this happy couple live to enjoy a good, ripe old age, and their career be "peaceful, prosperous and happy" is the wish of their host of friends.

AFFAIRS OF THE HEART

Young Couple Steal Away and Marry

WITHOUT ANY HAT The Girl Rides Nine Hours With Man of Her Choice
Believing that their plans to marry would be frustrated at Mt. Pleasant, Otis Goodman and Miss Florida Burness shied away from that town last Tuesday evening at 6 and arrived at Centreville at 3 a.m. next day.  They were accompanied by L. W. Dawson and Miss Daisy Goodman.  They stopped with F. P. Goodman, brother of Otis, and at 9 o'clock Rev. B. J. Reagin was called in and bespoke the eventful words which made the couple one.  The bride was a clerk in a store at Mt. Pleasant, and in her haste to get away she went out the back door without hat or bonnet, stepped into the buggy which her fiancé had waiting, and came with him to Centreville, the long, dark trip requiring nine hours. Her first purchase yesterday was a hat. The couple, it is said, feared the opposition of the girl's mother and brothers.  They returned yesterday to Mt. Pleasant where they are receiving the congratulations of friends.
