ALETHA V. DAVIS , 88, was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, June 22, 2008. Mrs. Davis was a native of Abingdon, Va., and had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Hilie Perdottie Alice Mahala Vanover. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was strong in her faith, putting God first, and sacrificing for her children and husband next. A doting grandmother, she spent many hours helping to raise five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, always enjoying them to the fullest.
She was deeply loved by her family and will be truly missed. Having lost both parents and becoming an orphan at the age of 12, she began working at a very young age. She stayed with a couple of families and did housework and laundry for room and board. She maintained a special love and friendship with one of those families, the Swartzs, throughout her life. Later, she also worked at the White City Laundry in Johnson City and at the North American Rayon plants in Elizabethton.
She met and married Jessie C. Davis in 1940 and shortly after began her family of four children. She stayed at home with her children and became a homemaker until all were in school. She then re-entered the workforce as a school cafeteria cook.
After retiring, she began her hobby of embroidery and quilting. Over the years she made many beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren. Many she gave away as wedding gifts. With a needle in hand she was most content. It was only in the past couple of years she became blind and thus unable to continue quilting. She occupied her days with listening to beloved gospel music and TV evangelists. A wonderful mother, she instilled in her children at a very young age right from wrong and being obedient to Christ. She was ever strong in her faith. She was loved deeply by her family and will be truly missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Jessie C. Davis; sisters, Fleecie Sara Isabelle Vanover and Hazel Pansy Marie Vanover; and brothers, William Joseph Henson Vanover, Benjamin Franklin Edward Vanover and Carl Wesley Calvin Vanover. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Glasgow and husband O'Neal, Patricia Blevins and husband William "Bill" of Johnson City and Vickie Barnett and husband Robin of Elizabethton; one son, Norman and wife Wanda of Johnson City; one stepson, Eugene Heaton and wife Lela of Roan Mountain; one brother, Martin Roy Laton Vanover of Barth, Mich.; five grandchildren, Bobby Glasgow of Pennsylvania, Cindy Glasgow-Rhodes and husband Robbie of New York, Todd Davis and wife Angie, Kim Jones and husband Danny and Renee Lewis and husband Gary, all of Johnson City; one step-grandson, Doug Heaton of Roan Mountain; five great-grandchildren, Carissa and Nicholas Davis, Mahala and Garyn Lewis and Morgan Jones, all of Johnson City; and one brother-in-law, Jack Hobson of Flint, Mich.
The family would like to thank Drs. Reedy, M. Kauzlarich, J. Holt and other colleagues of Family Medicine Associates for their care, support and kindnesses shown our mother and our family. A special thank you to caregivers, without who we couldn't have made it through the last four years: Loretta Marley, Patsy Mullis, Nancy Gibson, Sue Arnett and Colleen Norris. We know one day you all will be rewarded as you so richly deserve. Also, thanks to Tetrick Funeral Services and Roselawn Cemetery for your kind and caring service. A Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Davis will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Tetrick Funeral Services with Pastor Richard Bawgus officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Alan Barnett, Roman Holtzclaw, Gary Holtzclaw, Todd Davis, Doug Heaton and Bobby Glasgow. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. to go in procession. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, TN 37601; American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312; or to the American Heart Association, 208 Sunset Drive, Suite 356, Johnson City, TN 37604.
