Obituaries JOE S. ATWOOD
, 67, 510 Whaley Town Rd., Butler, died Saturday, November 29, 2003 in the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late John Vernie and Eva Jane Strickland Atwood.
He had lived in Illinois for 30 years before returning to Carter County in 1993.
Mr. Atwood retired in 1992 as a molder with the Brass Foundry of Peoria, Illinois.
He was a member of the Tabernacle of God Church, Johnson City.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie Pearl Arnold Atwood; one daughter, Arizona Miller, of Johnson City; three sons, Cecil Ray Atwood, of Hampton; Denny Joe Atwood, of Trivoli, Ill., and Jeff Lane Atwood, of Elizabethton; one step-son, Loyd Dugger, Butler; two brothers, Earl Atwood, of Mountain City, and Bob Atwood, Hampton; seven sisters, Mamie Hodge, Elizabethton; Doris Nelson and Bernice Barnes, both of Johnson City; Dorothy Reece and Margaret Campbell, both of Butler; Jean Perkins, of DeKalb, Ill. and Lois Lathrop, of DeKalb, Ill.; and six grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2003 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Wagner, Rev. Glenn Sheets and Rev. Tim Carver officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in the Washington County Memory Gardens. The Sheets family and By Way of the Cross Singers will provide the music. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Condolences may be e-mailed to mfc@chartertn.net. BEATRICE McQUEEN CLARK
, 334 Sugar Grove Church Road, Butler, formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Ms. Clark was a native of Johnson County and the daughter of the late Mac H. and Chelsie Robinson McQueen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Clark Jr. Ms. Clark was a member of Butler Baptist Church and was a former beautician. Survivors include two sisters, Buna Lehman, Georgetown, Texas, and Bonnie Wagner, Butler, and a brother, Estle McQueen, Johnson City. Four nephews and three nieces also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
ALETHA V. DAVIS
, 88, was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, June 22, 2008. Mrs. Davis was a native of Abingdon, Va., and had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Hilie Perdottie Alice Mahala Vanover. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was strong in her faith, putting God first, and sacrificing for her children and husband next. A doting grandmother, she spent many hours helping to raise five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, always enjoying them to the fullest.
ADDIE MAE (PEMBELTON) STANLEY
, Mrs. Addie Mae Pembelton Stanley, 87, 305 Colorado Street, Johnson City, died on Sunday, November 30, 2003, at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Franklin, Ky., Mrs. Stanley was born on September 21, 1916, to the late Earnest and Lou Ella Hite Pembelton.
Mrs. Stanley married Walter P. Stanley on May 6, 1933. She was a homemaker and was of the Free Will Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Fender, Johnson City, and Betty Ann Dempsey, Elizabethton; 3 sons, John Stanley, Billy Joe Stanley, and Charles L. Stanley, all of Johnson City; 13 grandchildren, including Terry Freeman, Elizabethton, and Rev. Gary Wayne Barnett, Chuckey; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stanley was preceded in death by her husband, Walter P. Stanley; a daughter, Gladys Mae Freeman; a sister; and three brothers.
The funeral service for Mrs. Stanley will be held at 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2003, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, with Rev. Jesse Wooten officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The graveside and committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:20 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to Monte Vista. NELSON R. TESTER
, 84, 1011 Sylvan Circle, Greeneville, formerly of Butler, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville, following an extended illness. Mr. Tester was a native of Watauga County, N.C., and the son of the late Eli Finley and Cameline Presnell Tester. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Mr. Tester was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church, Butler, where he served as a deacon and song leader. He has written numerous gospel songs. He was a retired school teacher of 32 years in the Carter County School System. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II, and was also a TSSAA Basketball Official and Supervisor. He received his B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie L. Tester, of the home; a son, James R. Tester, Chuckey; a daughter, Linda Kay Tester Hollaway, Butler; two brothers, Louis Tester, Grafton, Ohio, and William Howard Tester, Morristown; and three sisters, Rilda Campbell, Newport, Ida Finey, Butler, and Ruth Jones, Johnson City. Three grandsons, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
HAZEL L. WALKER/a>
, 88, 2564 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Asbury Center following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Walker was a native of Johnson County and had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a daughter of the late Cornelius and Claudia Stout Roberts and was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Walker, in 1969, and a daughter, Mary Jones, in 1986. Mrs. Walker was a retired saleslady with Thomas Ladies Shop. She was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Howard Walker, Johnson City; a daughter, Doris McKeehan, of the home; and two brothers, D.R. Roberts and Stanley Roberts, both of Bristol. Nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
