Stoddert Caruthers Home
Mr. Caruthers (1845-1904) was a large landowner, and former Confederate soldier. He was one of the leading bankers of the city. His home was at 208 Institute Street.
Mr. Caruthers was an able lawyer and a businessman. He was instrumental in getting the County Court in 1904 to issue four per cent bonds for the purpose of graveling and grading county roads. He was also responsible for getting the fence law passed so that pigs and cattle would not run in the streets. (Williams, Historic Madison).
