"EDGEWOOD"
This home was built in the 1840's by J.W. Campbell, who was Jackson's first banker and insurance agent. Early in July 1833, the Union Bank was opened in Jackson with James Caruthers as president and J.W. Campbell as cashier. Campbell lived in town for a few years but he purchased 1300 acres from James Hogg, and in 1855 started the construction of "Edgewood" at the site of what is now McMillan Towers on South Fairground.
This stately house, built with slave labor, faced Airways Boulevard. A circular driveway led carriages through a virgin forest. Six well lighted, spacious rooms with folding doors occupied teh lower floor. The flower gardens, the family portraits and the decorated high ceilings were a delight in the many guests who risited here. ( Williams, Historic Madison)
