"ROSE HILL"

Susan Allen Hurt (right) the daughter of Mathias and Elizabeth, married Robert Bailey Hurt

Rose Hill was built by Mathias Deberry on land that was included in an original land grant. After two years of work, it was completed in 1825. The original house had a wooden porch, white columns, spindle banisters, and steps all across the front. A sun porch on the east was added in 1921. The old house had a wooden walkway from the front porch to the road. The ceilings are twelve ft tall and the walls are one foot thick. The original chandeliers and windows were shipped up the Mississippi from New Orleans and then up the Forked Deer to Jackson. Most of these were taken by the Federal soldiers during their occupation from 1862 to 1863.

Deberry's daughter, Susan married Robert Bailey Hurt. His daughter ran the plantation while Colonel Hurt fought with the South during the Civil War. In her diary she says that the soldiers took five tons of hay, two thousand pounds of bacon, twenty-five chickens, twenty bushels of sweet potatoes and a hand gun while they occupied the plantation. After the war Colonel Hurt reported losses to the Board of Claims in excess of $40,000.

The home was remodeled in 1922 at which time bathroom, central heat, breakfast room and a kitchen were added. Dan Tankersley has owned the house since 1980.
