The John H. Tomlin Home
Residence at 438 East College Street was built in the 1850's. Tomlin was a leader at Jackson during the early days serving as postmaster in 1841 and mayor of the town from 1845 to 1854. He had a large law practice and he wrote poetry. His interest in poetry led to an extended correspondence with Edgar Allen Poe.
Tomlin hoped to get some of his poetry. These letters are in the Boston Public Library (also published in Williams, Historic Hadison.)
Tomlins home, which stood on the present site of the Jackson Madison County Library, was used by Federal soldiers when Jackson was occupied by Federal troops.
