Southern Hotel - On the left the hotel in 1913 - on the right as it looked in the 1940's

Facing Baltimore stands the New Southern Hotel where it has stood since 1823. In 1823 the land was deeded to James Greer. He built a family home on it. In June 1862 the house was used by the 11th IL Infantry (Springfield IL) of the Union Army under General Grant. After Battle of Corinth MS they marched into Jackson and remained there until August 2nd when they marched into Cairo IL.

After the war Mr. Ben Gates used it as a boarding house until 1870 when W.D. Robinson took possession of it until 1874 when Mrs. Mary L. Trimmier assumed management and the name was changed to "Trimmier House." Sometime later James E. Bright bought the property, remodeled it inside and out. The structure was replaced by a brick building and more rooms were added.

In 1884 Mrs. J.H. Day purchased the hotel and again it was renamed to "The Southern Hotel." Under her management it became an enjoyable, elegant place to dine and many travelers spent many nights of unsurpassed comfort in her rooms. Mrs. Day made many changes and improvements but always made sure the hotel reflected the everlasting "Southern Hospitality." Upon the death of Mr. day in 1914, the hotel was taken over by Mr. R.L. Burgess who managed it for the estate until 1924 when the family sold it. It now had 175 rooms, two dining rooms and large conference rooms.

Mr. Albert Noe of KY bought the hotel on July 7, 1924. He remodeled, added more rooms and it soon was completed with 250 rooms. If possible it was even more elegant than ever. Sometime during the 1960's it was again sold to Morris Crocker. He kept it as a hotel for many years but also converted many of the rooms into office spaces. Over 180 years later, she is still a vital part of downtown Jackson, Tennessee.
