Letter from David Carter to Chris and Kate King Wallace, sis to David Carter's wife Fannie. Envelope dated 5 PM, June 1902, sent from Harrison, Oklahoma to Medina, TN.
June 21st, 1902
Mr. C. Wallace and family. With the saddest heart of life I write you and Catie of your sister Fannies death which occured on the llth of this month. She was taken with flu about 10 days before being confined. The Doctor got her relieved after she was confined about 3 days, then fever set up and inflamation of the stomach and bowel set up and two of the best Doctors could not save her. We gave all the attention and medical aid anyone could have. We had lots company to help care for her. I had her put away just as she directed in wite. She told me when I asked her where she wanted to be buried to take her back to Pella and I went to the RR Co. and they would not cary the corps on the train, so I had to bury her at Harrison. So I will move her yet if I live long enough. Well Catie, the one was a girl, it died the 15th, it done all right until I let a lady in town take it home with her then it got so it slept all the time and would not eat hardly anything, so Fannie's wish was supplied, she said just before she died, she wanted it to follow her. Fannie suffered a heap before she died, but tried to make me and the children think she would overcome it all - she would not let me leave the bed side if she could help it. The Dr. told me the day before she died that it would be a close call. She would make me give her brandy every few minutes and get hot watter and rub her hands and arms and the Doctors injected medicine in her arms and legs, but nothing would raise her pulce. On the morning of the 11th about 8 o'clock, I was setting on the bed by her and she looked up at me and smiled and said well Dave, I have fought this as long as I can, my time is about wound here, I told her to pray and she smiled, it is all ready, she said and raised her hands to heaven and says I am not ashamed to meet my maker and said I see my little blue eyed now there, then told me and the children to all be good and we would meet again, kissed all of us and talked until 1 o'clock. Even after she could not see any, she would take hold of our hands, rub her hand on their heads, and talk as long as she had any breath to talk. Well, Criss and Catie, excuse me for not writeing sooner, no knowing what Lizzie writen to you. Criss, I can't stay here, this is an unpleasant place to live. Well, Briggs is a section hand, gets a dollar and 25 cents a day, boards himself, buys wood at $8 a cord, water 20 cents a barrel, stays behind all the time, so I have been told. He lives in a little hole in the ground full of fleas and chinches. Read this to Uncle John Walker. So good by, till we meet again. Signed D.A.C. (Dave Carter)

Letter from Sarah Carter of Alvord, TX, dau. of David and Fanny King Carter to
Kate King Wallace, dated March 10, 1942
Dear Aunt Kate and all, was really glad to hear from you once more and reslly proud to get the nice picture, I don't think I remember just how you all looked, except sister, her picture yet resembles how she looked when she was a little girl, and of course, I never saw any of the children except Lizzie and Johnnie, so sorry to learn that Lizzie's son died, how many children did whe have?
Is she and Johnnie grey? Buddie and I are. He is a grandfather, so is Bonnie. Poor darling Aunt Lizzie, I know she suffered so much. She told me if she went to Mineral Wells, TX she was going to stop off to see me and of course the poor old thing didn't go. But I just know that Ruth Kenworthy was just as sweet to her as she knew how to be, from the letters she wrote me, is it one bit like spring where you are? It has begun warming up a bit here now, one of Bonnies girls came down from Wichita Falls saturday night to see me, she is 17, she finishes high school this year. Two of Bonnie's boys may be in the service soon. I notice where our boys have begun to mix things with those Japs a bit. The people here are feeling the effects of the war already, sugar rationing and all that, well, of course, no one can tell what we may be called to go through yet, but here's hoping that it will soon be over for the sooner it ends, just that fewer boys killed. Well it is really awful at least that is what I think.. Aunt Kate, just how old would Mama have been if she were yet living? I think her birthday was Feb. 23 and I thought she would be about 76 or 77, and were you at our house when I came? If so, I may have to have a statement from you B 4 I can get my birth certificate. Someone who was present has to sign those, they say. I sent the picture you sent me to Bonnie, so she could see how you all looked now, but she will send it right back to me. Tell Lizzie I think she might write me sometime. Had a card from Mary this AM. She is ok. Well, I will close, hoping to receive and answer soon. I am as ever, your niece. Sarah Carter
Aug 13, 1967-
Letter from Sarah Carter to Della Gibbons King(Grandaughter of AJ Wallace and wife of Enoch King)
Well, yes, I was supposed to hear from you as I don't think you have written me since Unkle Enoch died. I always ask Lizzie Lund if she knows anything about all of you. One time, she said you had a sister I believe it was who lived close to she whom she ask about you. No, I don't know Grandmothers given name. I ask Lizzie that once. I guess she didn't know either, as she never wrote me that she knew. I know grand Dad Kings given name was Allen, as my mother named by brother that. If Mommie had lived until I was older, I would have known those things, but being only 9 years old when she passed on, I didn't know any thing about her people much. I know there were 2 boys and 3 girls. I ask Horton King if he knew my grandmothers given name, and he said Frances. I knew that was his mother's name. I don't know if Unkle Enoch told you or not, but Unkle Jimmie King's kiddoes and Mommie's Aunt Lizzie, Aunt Kate and the boys were double cousins. Their dads were brothers and their mothers sisters, so they were double cousins. Horton King, the last one of Unkle Jimmies children passed on last May 31. He died here in a home in Decatur. Had been there only a few days. I am enclosing his obituary. We had our cemetery reunion June l. I went and heard he had passed on there at the cemetery. Went back by the morgue and saw him, he looked so-so nice and didn't look his age at all. They put him away real nice. There in the Aklvord cemetery. He and Allie lived there in 1957. Their 2 oldest boys died and Lawrence had gotten their family tree all fired up, so I know you can get all the information that he had either from his mother Allie in Alvord, TX. Allie and her widowed daughter live together and Allies only living son is close by. So you can learn all that Lawrence King got toghether on the Kings and Walker families. Lawrence had his PHD and several other degrees form North TX State. Herman King told me that at the cemetery, so I don' know much my self, but Mommie had one half brother, his name was King, of course, that was by GrandDad's second wife. Unkle Jimmie had been married 3 times, Dad said he saw Grandad King once when he was here from TN visiting his brother. I'm sure that was B 4 Mommie and her sisters came to TX, I do not know what killed my grandmother, but she like my Mommie died young, I surmise. Also I do not know whether there was a baby left or not. Mommie would not hve died had she had the proper care, but that olf Dr., the only one there was in that town at the time was not good and Dad said he was a quack. And my sweet little baby sister died too. Mommie said that she would not live. We never named her and now I'll tell you about Bonnie. She married Ed Shuffler during the first world war. They had 10 children. She passed on April 9, 1957 at age 61. She has one lawyer, 3 teachers, the youngest boy was in the Peace Corp for 2 years, married in Panama and is now a Purser on Planes out of New York that go to Paris, Rome, London. He flies 4 times per month. Bonnie also has one married daughter living in Patterson, New Jersey. Her only son drowned on April 7 this year. Peg and Edd, that is this parents name are just almost killed. He was in Alledge in Michigan. And that is the way the world wags, here today and gone tomorrow. Bonnie died like Nettie Hill with cancer in California. She came by Decatur to see me that was in April 1953, that was the last I saw of she alive. I went into the hospital, and believe it or not, just now getting over it. Old Mary was 67 last Feb. 9. Buddie and his wife were here last week, they live in Mt. Pleasant, Tx. He will be 73 the 24th of Aug. Mary was in a car wreck 4 years ago, it left her a more lor less cripple. Well, I have written dates and don't know any thing. Are all you kiddies yet living, how many Grandkiddies do you have? Bonnie has 20 or more. Do take good care of yourself, and let me know how all are. Your niece, Sarah.

She married CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WALLACE August 31, 1892 in Decatur, Wise Co., TX, son of ANDREW WALLACE and FRANCES WILLSON. He was born December 09, 1872 in Bethel Springs, McNairy Co TN, and died February 19, 1953 in Alton, Madison Co., Illinois.
Notes for CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WALLACE: Occupation was mainly a blacksmith. He was a policeman in Alton, IL for a time.
Chris and Kate lived on 7th St. hill in Alton, IL. They lived at the top of the hill (226 W. 7th) and later at the bottom - I believe it was 209 W. 7th St. They had a pekinese dog named Fifi - none of us children liked it and Fifi didn't like us too well either!
We used to have big dinners there - all the relatives would come down from Chicago. The adults ate first, then the kids. There were only 2 big rooms, so it was very crowded, but we all had a good time. All the kids would go to the show after the meal. Grampa loved to play pinochle and I loved to play with him. He would get angry if he had to forfeit a counter card - and he would slam it down as forcefully as he could. (That always intimidated me - and I would try not to be the cause of that situation.) He was very hard of hearing, so would sit right up to the console radio to listen to it. He loved to listen to the Lone Ranger. Something all the kids would beg him to do (and he loved to do it for us) was taking a 50 cent piece and a medium sized wash tub. He would get the edge of that coin going around in the wash tub on its edge on the sides of the tub.
