| Deputy Sheriff John A. Gilbert Polk County Sheriff's Department Tennessee End of Watch: Thursday, June 14, 1928 Cause: Gunfire Biographical Info Deputy Gilbert was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious
vehicle parked along the road on Little Sand Mountain. The car was parked
in a location used by the local power company's payroll truck and had
caught the attention of power company workers. The workers notified Deputy
Gilbert, who lived nearby, and asked him to investigate the vehicle.

ambush as they conducted a routine check of a tavern on State Highway 68.
Two hidden gunman opened fire on them with shotguns as they stepped out of
their patrol car. Chief Deputy Wright and Deputy Rogers were both struck
by the shotgun blasts and killed. A third deputy returned fire but did not
strike the suspects.
