Parks, James (1813-1897) HOUSE, 34th (Reconstruction) General Assembly, 1867; representing McMinn, Meigs, and Polk Counties; replaced by W. J. Copeland in the last three session of the Assembly; Republican. Born in Pendleton District, South Carolina, on February 28, 1813; son of John and Jane (Whitten) Parks; extent of schooling not shown. Came to Ducktown, Polk County, in 1837, where he was a merchant and stock dealer. He was married (1st) to Cynthia Ann Knox, by whom he had four children, all of whom died in childhood, and (2nd) to Mrs. Evaline Rogers, by whom he had two children: James G. and Helen Parks. AT one time member of the Georgia Legislature. First clerk of Polk County Court, 1840-48; clerk of the circuit court, 1864-66; justice of the peace for 24 years. U. S. Commissioner for 25 years, a post which he held at his death. Colonel in state militia; member of Ocoee Lodge #212, F. & A. M. Died at Ducktown on January 4, 1897; buried near Copperhill, Polk County. Father of James G. Parks, sometime member Tennessee General Assembly. Prince, Winston Harland (1896-1949) HOUSE, 63rd General Assemblies, 1923-25,1927-29; representing Bradley and Polk Counties; Democrat. Born in Benton, Polk County, on January 23, 1896; son of William Albert and Laura Alice (Taylor) Prince. Educated in Polk County schools; received LL.D degree in 1920 from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Wilson County. Practiced law in Benton from 1921 until his death. Married in Lebanon, on March 24, 1920, to Martha Louise Hawks, daughter of William Wiseman and Tommie (Page) Hawks. Children: Panthia Page (Mrs. Julio Riparetti), Winston Harland, Jr., and William Albert Prince, III. Mayor of Benton, 1920-22. Sergeant in U. S. Army, World War I, 1918-19. Member of Baptist Church; American Legion; I.O.O.F., Worshipful Master, F. & A. M. Lodge #212, Benton, member of L. C. A., County bar associations. Died in Nashville, Davidson County, on October 31, 1949; buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Cleveland, Bradley County. Rose, William Clarence 91900-1958) HOUSE, 74th General Assembly, 1945-57; representing Bradley and Polk Counties; Democrat. Born at Ocoee, Polk County, on August 27, 1900; son of William Tillman and Betty (O'Neal) Rose. Educated in public schools of Cleveland, Bradley County. Occupation: automobile dealer of Copperhill, Polk County; military service in U. S. Navy, 1919-23. Married in Cleveland on June 11, 1924, to Anne Ford, daughter of Frank W. and Augusta A. (Tranthem) Ford. Children: Berry Rose (Mrs. Jack D. Allen) and William Ford Rose. Justice of the peace for six years; Polk County Welfare Commissioner, 1948-50. Member of Baptist Church; Kiwanis Club; Cleveland Golf and Country Club; American Legion. Died in Cleveland on August 9, 1958; buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Cleveland. Simonds, Ulysses Grant (1864- ?) HOUSE, 59th General Assembly, 1915-17; representing Bradley, James, and Polk Counties; Republican. Born at Cherokee, Swain County, North Carolina, on May 2, 1864; names of parents, extent of schooling not given. Occupation: engaged in carpentry and construction work at Ducktown Sulpher Copper Company, Polk County. Married to Daisy Welch; three sons, names not given. Member of Polk County Quarterly Court; Royal and Mason; Odd Fellow; Knight of Pythias. No further information. Stuart, James Green (1834-1901) HOUSE, 42nd General Assembly, 1881-83; representing Bradley and Polk Counties; Republican. His seat was contested successfully by M. T. Fouts, and he was unseated. Born in what is now Polk County on September 26, 1834; son of John Stuart. Attended Polk County Schools; studied law; admitted to the bar at Benton, Polk County. Married at Benton on November 11, 1856, to Mary Ann McKamey, daughter of James and Ann (Hannah) McKamey; children: Alice Ann (Mrs. Samuel M. Paul), Mary J., Susan M., Lela A., Liza, Maggie, Moriah, James and William Stuart. County attorney of Polk County for six years. Served in the Confederate army, details not given. In 1883, he removed to Cleveland, Bradley County, where he continued his law practice, and was both city recorder and mayor. Active in Republican Party affairs; one of the organizers of the Bradley County Confederate Veterans Society in 1890, holding offices of secretary, first lieutenant, and president. Died in Cleveland on May 10, 1901; buried in Fort Hill Cemetery. Stuart, James H. (c.1817- ?) HOUSE, 27th General Assembly, 1847-49; representing McMinn, Monroe, and Polk Counties; party affiliation not shown. Born C. 1817 in Tennessee; exact place and date, names of parents, and extent of schooling unknown. Studied medicine and is listed as a physician in the 4th civil district of Polk County. The maiden name of his wife, Mary E., is unknown; children: Catherine K., Margaret I., and Mary B. Stuart. One of the Commissioners of Revenue in 1845-46. No other information. Woody, W. A. (1877-1965) HOUSE, 70th General Assembly, 1937-39; representing Bradley and Polk Counties; Republican. Born at Servilla, Polk County, in 1877; names of parents and extent of schooling not given. Occupation: merchant and farmer; operated a grocery store at Reliance, Polk County, and in Chattanooga, Hamilton County. He was married, but the name of his wife has not been found; children: Vesta, Elsie, Robert, Gus, and W. A. Woody, Jr. Member of Polk County school board; clerk of the circuit court, 1910-18. Member of Baptist Church; 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite; Shriner; 50 year member of Reliance Lodge #636. F. & A. M. Died at Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky, on December 14, 1965; buried in Old Ocoee Cemetery, Polk County.
