Monday 5th January 1857.

ibid       A legal number of the Justice of the peace being present and voting therefore it is ordered by the court that Hugh Baker be allowed Six dollars payable out of the State Treasury for a wolf killed in Sevier County over four months old and that the Treasurer of the State of Tennessee pay the same.

ibid       This day Elijah Hatcher produced to the court a wild cat scalp which it was proved to the satisfied of the court that it was killed in Sevier County it is therefore ordered by the court that he receive a certificate which shall be received in payment of his poll tax.

Ordered by the court that the line between the First and Second Districts of Sevier county be changed as follows to wit said change to commence on the top of the Ridge opposite the mouth of the lane between B Brannon & William Huskey and then up said lane a south course to the line of the first district so as to include Beverly Brannom and Jacob Tyson in the first district.

ibid       Ordered by the court that John W Atchley be appointed overseer of the road from the ford of flat creek below Felkers to the Jefferson county line and he is hereby required to keep said road in lawful repair with the hands on the farms of John W Atchley & W P K Atchley

This day the court proceeded to vote for and elect three commissioners whose duty it shall be to examine all applicants to teach Free Schools and give certificates of Compency and after counting out the votes it appeared that the following was the state of the vote to wit

it was therefore considered by the court that the said Wm. L. Scruggs  R H Hodsden & B D Brabson are duly elected as such commissioners

This day the court proceeded to the election of a Revinue Collector for the year 1857 and after voting and counting out the votes it appeared that John T. Shields received thirteen votes and that Jesse Stafford received eleven votes.  It is therefore considered by the court that the said John. T. Shields be appointed Revinue Collector for Sevier County for the year 1857.

The jury of view heretofore appointed to view and mark out an alteration leading from the Newport road to Dandridge road just above George Foxes, said alterations to commence at the West end of a new field of Wm Foxes running straight along the end of said field nearly a south course so as to intersect the Newport road at the South West corner of said field and to extend said road by passing directly across the Newport road then on the line between Mark Fox and George Fox, then on the line between Mark Fox and Martin Bakers, also that they report as to the propriety of disanulling the two roads

running near the above named road, make the following report to wit

            We the undersigned after being duly Summoned and sworn according to law do hereby report that we have viewed and marked out the road directed to be viewed by the county court and report for the same as a good and practable rout for said road and recommend the said road to be established as a 3rd clap road agreeable to the above order of court, and being further directed to report as to the propriety of disanulling the two roads running near the above named roads do hereby recommend the same to be disannulled.

Court met pursuant to adjournment present & presiding the Honl Saml Pickens County Judge & the following Justices of the peace to wit

The jury of view heretofore appointed to view and mark out an alteration in the road near H S Catletts upon his petition made the following report to wit, We the jury duly summoned and sworn do make the following report as a jury of view.  Alter the road by leaving the old road beginning at a stake at the foot of the Hill below Catletts house thence running on the south side of the branch and intersect the old road at a white oak all as marked out all of which is respectfully submitted this        day of October 1856

ibid       Upon the petition of James Proffit & others it is ordered by the court that John Shults  Alexander Baxter  Pleasant Shults, Jacob Tyson  Beverage Branom & Thomas Mathes be appointed a jury of view to view and extend the road leading through Jones Cove up Duns creek in Sevier County to Emerts Cove in Sevier County and that they report to the next quarterly term of this court

ibid       Ordered by the court that William A Baxter be appointed overseer of the road from the point of the ridge above Berry Williams upper field to the road leading from Cocke County to Emerts Cove and he is hereby required to keep said road in lawful repair with the hands on the following farms towit  Thomas Mathes farm, Robert Mathes farm  Pleasant Shults farm, John Shults farm, Wm A Baxters farm & John Williams Sr. farm

A legal number of the justices of the peace being present and voting therefore, it is ordered by the court that the following taxes be assessed for the year 1857 to wit

For county purposes Twenty eight cents on the hundred dollars worth of taxable property and twenty five cents on each poll

For Poor purposes two cents on the hundred dollars worth of taxable property,

and that a tax of Twenty five cents on the hundred dollars worth of taxable property and twenty five cents on the poll be assessed to pay for the building of the court house and Jail

That a county tax of the amount of the state tax be assessed for the privelege of Exhibiting Shows and Hawking & Pulling and upon all other privileges one half of the state tax.

It is ordered by the court that the assessor apply to the attorney General of the state for his opinion whether the late revinue act passed at the last session of the Legislature repeals the act assessing a school tax and an act levying a tax for the Lunatic Hospital and should it be decided by the attorney General that the law assessing the school tax and Lunatic Hospital tax are not repealed the county tax on property be reduced to twenty four cents and the county tax of twenty five cents on the poll be set aside and appropriated to paying the school tax

ibid       Ordered by the court that Robert H. Roberts be appointed overseer of the road from M Davis to the Road at Hugh Blairs and he is hereby required to keep said road in lawful repair with the hands heretofore assigned

This day W H Trotter & C Mills presented to the court their resignations as Trustees of Nancy Academy which resignations were received by the court.

ibid       Ordered by the court that John Mitchell be appointed overseer of the Streets of Sevierville and he is hereby required to keep said streets in lawful repair with the hands living in the town of Sevierville

This day the court proceeded to bind out to L W Burns a collored (sic) child by the name of Rebecca aged eight years until she attains she attains the age of twenty one years after the manner of an apprentice for which said Burns agrees to Educate her until she can read and when she attains the age of twenty one years he is to give her one bed and furniture one good milk cow & calf one spinning wheel & cards and three suits of clothing one of which is to be a good out going suit.
