Monday 7th Sept 1857.

This day the court appointed Nancy Robeson guardian to Joel Robeson a minor orphan she therefore gave bond in the sum of one thousand dollars with James Eslinger as her security and was duly sworn.

This day John McMahan came into court and renewed his bond as Guardian to Martha R McMahan and came into court in the sum of one thousand dollars with David McMahan as his security

ibid       Ordered by the court that Samuel Henry be appointed overseer of the road from Henrys X Roads to the Jefferson County line and he is hereby required to keep said road in lawful repair with the hands heretofore assigned

ibid       It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that Anderson Chance had been improperly charged with a poll tax for the year 1856 he being an overseer of a public road and having served as such for twelve months before, it is therefore ordered by the court that he be released from said poll tax.

ibid       Upon the verbal petition of B. D. Brabson guardian &C & David McCroskey it is ordered by the court that John Mullendore, A. Lawson, Wellington McMahan, Robert H. Hodsden, Thomas Cate, Joel Hudson, Morgan Davis, Joshua H Atchley, & Wm H Cowan be appointed a jury of view to view and report to the next October term of the County as to the propriety of discontinuing the public road from the bridge on Dumplin Creek to the five mile tree on the Knoxville road below Dr. Birdwell.

Issued              Ordered by the court that John Cowden be appointed overseer of the road from the Underdown Ferry road to the top of Bays Mountain and he is hereby required to keep said road in lawful repair with the hands heretofore appointed assigned

The jury of view appointed at the last July term of this court to view and mark out an alteration in the road from Amos Trotters to the west fork of little Pigeon river, this day presented to the court the following report

            After being duly qualified, we the undersigned jurors of view have this day viewed the contemplated change mentioned in the within order

            We believe the change entirely practicable and of great advantage to the petitioner & of no disadvantage the public or any private individual as it passes over firmer ground & in length of it is not more than 70 or 80 yards farther than the old road

Issued              Ordered by the court that James Maples be appointed overseer of the road from the middle of the long ford on the west fork of little Pigeon River to the ford of the same River nearest below Martin Claboughs and he is hereby required to keep said road in lawful repairs with the hands heretofore assigned

The jury of view appointed at the last August term of this court to view and mark out an alteration in the road commencing near James McMahans barn - and to report to this term of this court - this day presented the following report to wit

"We the undersigned - have viewed and marked out the alteration asked for in the within order commencing said order at a marked pine then near the foot of the hill so as to intersect the old road at the west end of a dug piece of Road by Petitioners (James McMahans) fence we have been sworn according to law - this 5th day of Oct 1857

Rescinded        A legal number of the justices of the peace being present rendering it a competent court to make allowances out of the County Treasurer

            Elijah Cates moved the court to make him an allowance for Twenty days services as a building commissioner for the public buildings at Sevierville at one Dollar per day and thirty three ferriages at 10 cents each which account reaches from his appointment to the April term 1857 of this court and there upon the allowance was made by the court the following Gentlemen voting in the affirmative F L Emert, J H Cate, J. M. Evans  M Davis, P. S. Shults  Isaac Trotter  C Johnson  R W Crowson and these voting in the negative were J. B. Seaton  Thos. Maples  R M Creswell  N M Baker  L Bogart  T. W. Randles & J. T. Havis and the vote on said motion ordered to be recorded

ibid       It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that H S Catlett was improperly taxed with a poll tax for the year 1857   It is therefore ordered by the court that he be released from the payment of said Poll tax
