PAYNE, ORANGE - A deplorable accident, resulting in the death of a well known and respected colored man, Orange Payne, aged about 45 years, occurred near the Illinois Central depot in this city Friday morning. Payne, who has been employed as porter for Fargason's wholesale grocery for some time, was hauling flour in a wagon from the Fargason warehouse to the depot for shipment, when the team of mules he was driving became frightened, and ran away, throwing him out of the wagon. In the fall he struck against a large crate on the depot platform, but immediately regained his feet, picking up his hat, but no sooner had he gotten up than he was seen to totter and sink to the ground, when Mr. Marshall Baxter, who saw the runaway, ran to his assistance, and laid him down on the crate, where he expired in a few moments. Payne evidently sustained internal injuries when he was thrown against the crate. No bones were found broken. He is survived by his wife, but leaves no children. The runaway team was stopped just at the south platform of the depot. A broken tongue was the only damage done to the wagon.
