QUIET REIGN'S IN VAN HORN TOWN

 Officers Sent There Hare Returned to El Paso  Special to the News El Paso, Tex. May 15. -Twenty-five residents of Van Horn are in El Paso to be present at the examining trial of W. P. Hawkins charged with killing Charles Barber. which win be held here today. The Rangers, who were sent to van Horn yesterday to preserve order in event of a clash between the saloon men and the prohibitionist which was feared, have returned to this city and say everything is quiet in Van Horn, although sentiment is high. OLD SETTLERS AT VAN HORN Annual Picnic with Roping Contest Held Last Week. Special to The News. Van Horn. Tex., Aug. 30.-Van Horn held its annual picnic (old settlers' picnic), Thursday. Quite a crowd was in attendance. People were here from the adjoining counties and also from New Mexico. In the evening there was a roping contest with a first prize of $50 for the best time. In roping, throwing and securely tying 3 and 4-year-old steers. The first prize was won by Ben Pruitt of Marfa, Tex.: time made was fifty-three seconds; second prize was won by Joe Canon of Van Horn. Dallas Girl to Teach In Van Horn School Special to the News. VAN HORN, Culberson Co., Texas. Aug. 28.-Miss Marcy Lee Jackson of Dallas has been elected to teach domestic science In the Van Horn school the coming year, beginning Sept 12.The other teachers are Rex Strickland, superintendent: Mrs. Rex Strickland. BANDITS KILL THREE. SOUTH OF VAN HORN AMERICAN BOY BADLY WOUNDED AND RANCH IS LOOTED BY BAND OF MEXICANS. Marfa. Texas. March 26. Glenn Nevill 18 years old, was shot seven times and two Mexican men and one Mexican woman killed in a raid by Mexican bandits on the Nevill South ranch, forty-three miles south of Van Horn. Texas, at 12:30 o'clock this morning. Reports to district military headquarters here early today told of the casualties Earlier reports had said J. H. Nevill, owner of the ranch, had been killed. The troops from Evert's ranch arrived at the ranch shortly after the raid. The Sheriff at Van Horn and a party of citizens left for the ranch at 2 a.m. and took up the trail of the bandits. Glenn Nevill was seriously wounded, but still alive at last reports. The bandits looted the ranch and escaped. March 27, 1918

Van Horn Cattle Notes Van Horn. Tex., Sept. 21.-J. H. Cole sold his ranch, consisting of seventy sections of leased land, partly fenced, two windmills and ranch house, to Brown & Wrackley, about 1000 head, to a ranch he bought recently near Roswell, N. M. R. P. Bean is moving 1000 head of stock cattle from his ranch near here to another ranch near Roswell. N. M. Morrison & Cureton sold 300 head of yearlings to Kansas City parties at 116 per head. A great many yearlings and some 2-year old steers are still being held here, prices offered not being satisfactory. Sept 24, 1909 Dallas Morning News

SHERIFF AT VAN HORN NABS MARK WHEELER. By The Associated Press Fort Worth, Texas. May 15.- Mark Wheeler. sent up from Tarrant County for ninety-nine years for robbery with firearms, was captured today by Sheriff Cummings of Van Horn, Culberson County, according; to word received here. Wheeler escaped from the penitentiary after serving eighteen days of his sentence, three days before the wholesale prison delivery occurred at Huntsville. Wheeler, after spending two days in Fort Worth, riding around In a high powered automobile. which, it is thought, was stolen in Houston, escaped a strong line of guards thrown around all roads leading out of the county. It is said that he was on his way to Mexico when apprehended. Officers from Fort Worth will go to Van Horn and take Wheeler back to Huntsville. It is possible that he will be returned to Houston to face charges of robbery with firearms and theft of an automobile the officers declared. He was tried in the District Criminal court here on April 1. His some is in Fort Worth. May 16, 1921 Dallas Morning News

Accident at Van Horn. Van Horn, Tex., Jan. 1.-Miss Eva Wagenfehr had her collarbone broken yesterday evening by falling out of a buggy and the hind wheels running over her. She was out driving with Mr. Walter Beach and Mrs. Herring. The reins broke and the horse run away and into a fence, throwing the occupants of the buggy out with the above result. Mrs. Herring was slightly bruised, but Mr. Beach escaped without injury. Miss Wagenfehr Is resting easy and no serious results are anticipated. January 3, 1900 Dallas Morning News

Notes from Van Horn Van Horn, Tex, Oct 27, The democrats of this vicinity will hold a grand rally at this place on Monday night, Oct 29. All the county candidates and a number of prominent speakers will be present. Copious rains in the past two weeks have filled all the water holes and ducks and quail without number are brought in daily by the numbers. J. J. McCollough J H Stimson,and Miss.Sadie Johnson are visiting the fair at Dallas, Deputy Sheriff R. H. Keesee has just returned from a month's trip among the mountains and reports a good time and plenty of game. The Texas and Pacific railway has a large force of men here engaged in putting in tanks, derricks, engines and when completed this will be the most important water supply station on the road. SHOOTING NEAR VAN HORN Dispute Over a Well May Result in a Death. Special to The News Van Horn. Tex., June 28.-Domingo Lartirigoyen, a Frenchman, was shot and badly wounded at his home, about eight miles southeast of Eagle Springs this morning. Lartirigoyen's wounds are very serious though he has a chance to recover. . His tongue and right shoulder are paralyzed. It is said he and a neighbor quarreled over the use of a well. No arrest has been made. The wounded man is a sheep owner. June 29, 1901
