A
Legend in her own right, forever etched into the
history of McCamey, Texas.
According
to the locals, In the late 1920's a circus came
to McCamey. Pansy and her husband were members of the
circus, as trapeze artists. During a performance a
tragic accident occurred, Pansy and her husband fell
from the trapeze. The accident caused the death
of her husband and left Pansy with severe head
injuries. Pansy stayed in McCamey for the rest of her
life, living as a recluse and an eccentric. Pansy
built her home out of scraps of lumber and even added
a garage. The garage was used to house her husbands
model A Ford, which she set the wheels in cement so it
would not be stolen. Pansy never learned to drive, the
automobile was her link to her husband and remained so
until she sold it to Freddie McKinney. Pansy did
however own wagons, not the typical western wagons,
but radio flyer wagons, that she used to pull around
town collecting her treasures. A kind and generous
person, she often donated goods she had collected such
as can foods, and non perishables to people who she
deemed needed help. Most of the children were
scared of her, perhaps it was her looks or her manner
of dress, she never posed a threat to anyone. It has
been said she would walk from McCamey to San Angelo a
distance of 94 miles to do her banking. According to
the Mendoza Trail Museum Pansy had many photos of her
husband which she displayed on the top of her piano.
Some say she would not attend church but, could be
heard playing and singing hymns on Sunday mornings.
Why she stayed in McCamey may never be known. Despite
her eccentric ways, the roughshod shacks she built and
rented. Which in those days were better than the
tents most people were residing in. She made her
living. Residents of McCamey have many memories
of Pansy. She will forever be a part of the history of
McCamey. Farewell............

The
Carr Family
It
is not known who Pansy married, that fell to his
tragic death. Record searches have not proven even a
circus in McCamey. Whether her husband died in a
circus fatality or if his death was the result of
another accident, the fact remains. Pansy was a part
of the early days of McCamey, Texas. Below is the
family history of Pansy Carr Carpenter.
Pansy
Carr was born January 6, 1894 to Mary Rebecca Bennett
and Lee Carr. Mary Rebecca Bennett and Lee Carr were
married Mar 14, 1889 in Bandera County
when Mary was fourteen years old. . Pansy was the
third child born to her parents. Her siblings
were, Lee, Lewis, and sister Ollie Carr.
Pansy's father died before the year 1900. Her mother
Mary Rebecca remarried John Richard "Dick"
Walker after 1900 and had a daughter named Clara
Walker who was born in 1906. Clara married a Pierson
and moved to Portland Oregon. Pansy was more than
likely a nickname and her true name at birth was after
her grandmother Fannie. She was enumerated in 1900 as
Fannie.
Pansy
lived with her grandparents for a while after the
death of her father. Her maternal grandparents
were William M Bennett born in April 15, 1843 in
Mississippi and died March 31, 1912 in San Antonio.
and Fannie Anne Moody daughter of George W. Moody from
Kentucky and Rebecca Mayham. Fannie Moody was born
October 22, 1854 and died May 18, 1930. Both are
buried in San Antonio City Cemetery # 3. Fannie

County, until the post office was removed in the town
of Fagan.
