Man Seeks Sheriff's
Office RANKIN, March 10.—E.
A. Fletcher, former
secretary of the Rankin
Chamber of Commerce,
local booster and
business man, has
"thrown his hat in
the ring" as a
candidate for the office
of sheriff of Upton
county. His opponent
thus far in the campaign
is present Sheriff Bud
Barfield. Mr. Fletcher
has been in West Texas
the past two or three
years, and during that
time, has formed a wide
acquaintance. Abilene

RANKIN-Rankin Tex.. Aug.
20.—W. C Fowler
defeated candidate for
sheriff of Upton County,
today obtained delay in
his two suits growing
out of the primary
election. Judge C. E.
Sutton, sitting in
special session of the
eight third district
court, set over the
cases until the regular
term of district court
Sept. 25. Fowler is
seeking writ of mandamus
to force the Upton
County executive
committee to hold a
runoff primary. He also
is contesting the
election because of
purported casting
of illegal

Alpine-Funeral services
will be conducted here
Saturday for Robert N.
(Bob) Stephenson. 65,
former Upton County
sheriff who died
Wednesday in Las Cruces.
N. M. Born April 14.
1896, in Rankin. he was
collector and sheriff of
Upton County during the
oil boom. He later
operated a tourist court
in Lampasas and moved to
Las Cruces a year ago.
Survivors include his
wife; two daughters.
Mrs. John English,
Kermit, and Mrs. J. V.
Young. Las Cruces; one
son. Ray Stephenson,
Wichita Falls; one
brother, T. L.
Stephenson, Kennedy, and
seven grandchildren.
