Comanche
County was organized from portions of Coryell and Bosque
Counties on May 17,1856, and named for a tribe of Indians.The first
county seat of the county was at the settlement of Troy, which
was later renamed Cora in honor of Cora Beeman daughter of
Alonzo Beeman of Bell County. The County seat was was then moved
in July 18, 1859 to Comanche. Among the first white settlers to
venture into Comanche county in the early part of 1850's was the
Mercer, Collier, Tuggle, Oaks, and Holmsley families. Among the first
permanent settlers of comanche county were Asa Reed, Charles C
Campbell, F. M Cross. The birth of Katie Campbell, daughter of Charles
C. Campbell is recorded as the first white birth of Comanche county
recorded as September 20, 1855. |
