NATIVE JEFFERSON COUNTY CITIZEN TAKEN BY .DEATH

Beaumont, Tex., April 3.— AP — Capt. Raymond Knight Taylor, 81, native of Jefferson County and member of one of the first families to settle along Taylors Bayou, died today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alzena Gwen Pillow, at Port Acres, suburb of Port Arthur.
Taylor watched the battle of Sabine Pass during the civil war and took charge of his family when his father, a New England mariner who settled in this section in the '50s, was killed by the confederate troops. His father, Gilbert Taylor, was on the Yankee gunboat Clifton when the confederates blew it up. He reached the river bank badly wounded and was shot there.
In the waterway transportation business most of his life, Capt. Taylor deserted his career to serve as conductor for the first street car, drawn by mules, in Beaumont. Later he bought out the company. After several years, however, he returned to his transport work on waters in this area.
