ANNETTE LOUISE HOLMAN ALLEN
Annette Louise Holman Allen of Del Rio was born on July 6th, 1915, in Sonora, Texas and went home to her Savior on August 1st, 2006 at the age of 91.
Annette was the older of two daughters born to a Del Rio and Sonora rancher, Homer Holman, and his wife, Clifford Miller Holman. She grew up in Sonora and Del Rio, and was a well-known and respected member of the Del Rio community. A life-long rancher, she was an active member of the Del Rio First United Methodist Church, the Del Rio Fine Arts Club, and the Morning Glory Garden Club in Del Rio.
In 1942, Annette met and married William "Bill" Henry Allen, who had been posted to Fort Clark in Brackettville during the early days of World War II. They had two children, Analyn Allen Stokes and John William Allen. Following WWII, Bill and Annette settled in Del Rio where Bill managed the family ranching operation both in Del Rio and Sonora for many years. When Bill passed away in March 1982, Annette assumed management of the ranching business and continued to do so until only a few short years ago. Annette was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Bill; her parents, Homer and Clifford Holman; her stepmother, Ruth Homan; and, her sister, Marilyn Holman Changala, as well as many life-long friends and neighbors. She is survived by a family who loved her very much; her daughter, Analyn Allen Stokes and her husband, Richard W. (Bud) Stokes of New Braunfels, TX; and, her son John William Allen and his wife Laura Allen of Del Rio. She is survived by her niece, Randee Changala Fagan of Del Rio and her nephew, Jimmy C. Holman of Sonora. In addition, Annette leaves four grand-daughters: Alyson Stokes Lee of Moore, OK; Anjanette Stokes Klein of Norfolk, VA; Ashley Allen and Brooke Allen of Del Rio; and, two step-grandsons, Asa Allen and Garrett Galloway of Del Rio TX. She is also survived by four great grandsons: Garrett Randal Lee; John Michael Klein III; Mason Wallace Lee; and, Samuel Joshua Klein. Annette leaves to her surviving family a legacy of a true Texas woman: strength of character; unwavering honesty, fierce loyalty; selfless dedication; and, a fearless work ethic. She set the standard for "playing the hand she was dealt-no matter how difficult or challenging" - and doing it with an unquestioning faith in God to lead her through any difficulty. She was respected, admired and loved by all who knew her. Her quick wit and sense of humor were renowned. She was as tough as nails, yet as gentle as a lamb. She was quick to rebuke wrongdoing, but even quicker to forgive. She counted character above profit and honor above advantage. Her handshake was her bond. Annette placed God first, her family second, and everything else a distant third. The role model she leaves for her descendants truly qualifies her as a member of the "Greatest Generation".
Visitation with the family will be at G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Del Rio on Thursday, August 3rd, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Graveside services will be conducted at West Lawn Cemetery in Del Rio at 9:30 AM on Friday, August 4th, 2006, with interment to follow.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Bill Cauthorn; T. J. Jarrett; Tuffy Whitehead; Coy Smith; David Morgan; and Fred Rose.
