First Methodist Church

It was in 1892, during the pastorate of the Rev. R.J. Briggs, that the church reached its peak 19th-century membership of 675. For a time the church was called Central Church, South; later it was referred to as Tenth Street Church until 1902, when it was officially called First Methodist Church. However, the term "Tenth Street Church" remained in common use until 1923.

TO MY WIFE Mary “Fannie” Dickenson Holley who died of typhoid fever in our beautiful home on White Avenue, Austin Texas in 1892. We were married on the 18th of April in the Methodist Episcopal Church by Dr. Briggs in 1888. The ushers at my wedding were William Sidney Porter (O’Henry); Jas.
